JOHN RAE OF LITTLE GOVAN

John Rae is the son of John Rae and his wife Janet Finniestoun. He was born before 19 May 1656, the date upon which his baptism was registered at High Church parish in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Scotland Births and Baptisms

John Rae, merchant in Glasgow, was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of the burgh of Glasgow on 29 September 1688. he was admitted him in right of his father. Glasgow Burgesses

John Rae of Little Govan, formerly John Rae of Broomlands, succeeded to the lands belonging to his cousin, Archibald Rae of Tannochside Stoddart: Scottish Arms He is mentioned in the Lanark Sasine Register. Grant of Armorial Ensigns

According to R. R. Stoddart, "John Rae of Little Govane" was granted Arms in 1758: vert, a chevron argent between three roebucks in full course proper" Stoddart Scottish Arms However, John Rae of Little Govan died before 15 November 1732, the date upon which his eldest son Robert was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of Glasgow, and so Stoddart's proposal cannot be correct. Robert Rae of Little Govan died in 1754 and so it was probably his eldest son, John Rae of Little Govan, who had a grant of Arms in 1758.

His future daughter-in-law

John Rae, merchant in Glasgow, was one of the witnesses present at the baptism of his neice-in-law, Elizabeth Dunlop, daughter of James Dunlop of Garnkirk, on 8 November 1698. Elizabeth would afterwards marry John's son, her cousin, Robert Rae of Little Govan. Her baptismal record reads as follows: "Elizt laull daughter to James Dunlop of Garnkirk baptized Witneses therto Matt Cuming of Cardarach Mr Archd Robertone of Bedlay Jo: Rae and Wm: Dunlop Merts in Glasgow" [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1]

According to R. R. Stoddart: "Archibald Rae, merchant, burgess of Glasgow, married Christian, daughter and heiress of John Jack of Tannochside, in Lanarkshire, who was dead in 1678.
