About John "Hero of Sark" Wallace of Craigie, 5th of Craigie, 10th of Riccarton

John "The Hero Of Sark" Wallace, 5th of Craigie, 10th of Riccarton ( b abt 1400 d about 1450)

The 1448 clash was the first decisive victory for a Scottish force over the English since the Battle of Otterburn, 60 years earlier. It was the final pitched battle between the two countries in the period of the Hundred Years War.

Renewed border skirmishing saw Henry Percy, future 3rd earl of Northumberland, defeated by Hugh Douglas, earl of Ormond, on 23 October 1448. The encounter took place on the river Sark, near Gretna. Percy was taken prisoner and had to be ransomed.

Note 1 - The Battle of Sark was fought in October 1448. Soooo this could NOT have been the John Wallace who married Catherine Douglas.

Looking back up the tree a little is a John Wallace b. ca 1390 who married Elizabeth Cathcart. This John was know as the "Good Laird" and is of an age (58) that makes him a prime candidate for being the "Hero of Sark"

He is referred to as "Wallace of Craige" so we know that this is the right family at least. Also he suffered a mortal wound in the battle and died of it later
