About Joseph Blanchard, of Boston

The father of Captain Joseph Blanchard was Deacon John Blanchard, who, as a boy, came from England with his parents, Joseph and Ann Blanchard (or "Blanshar") in 1637. This family was Norman-French Huguenot, and had come to England in 1610, with others, to escape persecution on the Continent. Several of the family remained in England, but Joseph as mentioned emigrated to America in 1637, and his brother, Thomas, two years later, followed in the ship Jonathan. In religion this family were Calvinistic Protestants, associating themselves with the Puritans of England and the Congregationalists in America.

JOSEPH-1 BLANCHARD died in the 10th month 1637 [vital records of Boston MA].

Joseph married Ann -- who died 24 June 1662 [recorded at Chelmsford and at Woburn MA]. The widow Ann and her children soon moved to Salem MA for "At a town meeting the 26th of the 9th month 1638, it is recorded that of "severall portions of Land Laid out at Marblehead, 6 acres of the Necke" were formally granted to "the Widow Blanchard." She was admitted to church membership at Salem, 30 July 1643, and an early court record shows that she appeared as a witness at the session held 8 May 1745 where she is referred to as "Goodie Blanchar." In later years, after her children were grown she appears to have resided in Chelmsford MA. Her estate was administered by her son, John.

Crawford Hartman, B.A., B.S., of Brooklyn, NY.:"JOSEPH1 BLANCHARD died in the 10th month 1637." This terse statement in the vital records of Boston is the only definite fact in the life of Joseph Blanchard and constitutes, incidentally, the earliest reference in Colonial records to this well-known New England family. In the absence of any further information about him it is assumed that he died shortly after his arrival in the colonies.

  • http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blanch-l/bldna.html There is an oft-repeated assertion that two early Massachusetts immigrants Thomas and Joseph Blanchard were brothers, and another claim that a grandson of Joseph migrated to North Carolina to found a Blanchard line there. Neither claim has been substantiated. In the past, such stories have remained indefinitely in a kind of genealogical limbo, since lack of evidence is not evidence of a lack. The fact that there is no known record of the birth or baptism of either Thomas or Joseph Blanchard, nor even any indication of Joseph's original home, means that conventional genealogy must remain silent on the questions of whether and how these two men might be related. DNA testing offers a new approach to family history research.
