BIOGRAPHY Carel Anton Ferdinand, known as Charles, Graaf Bentinck, was born 4 March 1792 in Utrecht, the second son of Jean Charles, Graaf Bentinck, and Jacoba Helena, Gravin van Reede.
When the French army in 1795 invaded The Netherlands, his family fled to England. Aged 18 he joined the Coldstream-Guards and served under the future Duke of Wellington. Taking part in the war in Spain, in 1811, Charles Bentinck was wounded in the Battle of Barossa where the French general Victor was defeated. In 1813 he returned to The Netherlands. In June 1815 he took part in the Battle of Waterloo.
For much of his life he was involved in litigation with his Bentinck cousins over the properties Varel and Kniphausen. It would take till 1854 before the matter was settled.
Charles, Graaf Bentinck, on 30 January 1846 in Waldeck, married Mechtilde, Gräfin zu Waldeck und Pyrmont, daughter of Karl, Graf zu Waldeck und Pyrmont, and Karoline, Gräfin Schilling von Canstadt. Charles and Mechtilde became the parents of four sons and one daughter.
Charles died 28 October 1864 in Bergheim, Waldeck. His widow died 28 February 1899 at Middachten.
