About Klauber
He was known to the Family as “old” Klauber, enormously wealthy, but other than that we know little about him. Old Klauber lived in the 18th Century. There is a painting of him which used to belong to my Aunt Nelly; now it is in the home of George Ferencz in England. “Old” Klauber was referred to as the “smuggler”, “a csempész”, because he was suspected by some to have made his money by smuggling, but according to close family members this was incorrect and unjust.
In any case, his wealth was legendary and it was said that when his only daughter married, he gave her a dowry which consisted of a bushel of gold coins.
