Biography

Profile Managers note: The information in the below biography was provided to me by Mr. Lloyd D. Bockstruck of Dallas Texas. He is a noted author and genealogical researcher and a descendant of Laurence.

Lawrence Bradley was born in Orange County, Virginia ca. 1737 and died in Burke County, North Carolina in 1811.

Lawrence Bradley married Winifred Wisdom, daughter of John and Ann (Collins) Wisdom, in Orange County, Virginia ca. 1760. During the early years of the Revolutionary War they were members of a large group of families who removed to Wilkes County, North Carolina.

He arrived in North Carolina prior to 8 December 1778 when he entered 100 acres on a branch of Kings Creek at John Wisdom's line. In order to have entered the land, he was required to take the oath of allegiance to the Revolutionary government of North Carolina. Kings Creek was a branch of the Yadkin River in southern Wilkes County near the Burke County line. Later when the patent was issued, the name of Lawrence Bradley had been crossed out and the name of John Wisdom written in lieu thereof.[1]

According to the 1784 tax list of Wilkes County, North Carolina, Lawrence Bradley had one poll and owned 125 acres. In 1785 he had no land.[2] In the 1787 state census of Wilkes County, Lawrence Bradley was in Captain Thomas Farguson's district. He had one white male between 21 and 60 years of age [himself], one white male under 21 or above 60 [son Richard], and four white females [his wife Winifred, his daughter Nancy, and two other unidentified daughters].[3] He had one poll but no land according to the Wilkes County tax list for 1787, but in 1788, 1789, and 1790 he had one poll and owned 80 acres.[4] He did not however, appear on the 1790 census of Wilkes County. In 1791, 1793, and 1794 his entry on the tax list remained the same.[5]The 1799 tax list indicated he still owned 80 acres.[6]

Joshua Jones sold 100 acres on the middle fork of Kings Creek adjoining John Durham to Lawrence Bradley for £50 in April 1789. The witnesses were Russel Jones, Samuel Tucker, and Henry Hagard[7] Samuel Tucker proved the deed from Joshua Jones to Lawrence Bradley in Wilkes County court on 26 April 1791.[8]On 11 February 1794 the court ordered John Bradley. Lewis Carlton. Joshua Story. Sr., Samuel Woodard, Edmond Herrin, Daniel Herrin, Patrick Mooney, John Walker, Zarrah Coffey, Cleveland Coffey, Ananias Allen, John Witherspoon. Phillip Davis Sr., John Wallace, John Wallace, Jr. James Farguson, Lawrence Bradley, Levy Laxton, and John Grayson to view the road from Lewis Carlton's to Ananias Allen's.[9]On 31 January 1797 Lawrence Bradley proved a deed for 100 acres from John Grayson to Ann Wisdom in Wilkes County Court.[10]

According to the 1800 census of Wilkes County, North Carolinathe household of Lawrence Bradley consisted of the following: 1 male under the age of 10 1 male between 10 and 16 [Richard] 1 male over 45 [Lawrence] 1 female under the age of 10 1 female between 26 and 45 1 female over 45 [Winifred]. , [11] His mother-in-law, Ann Wisdom, made her will in Wilkes County. North Carolina on 25 October 1799 and it was proved there in August 1801. She named Lawrence Bradley and Lewis Carlton executors. [12] Lawrence Bradley removed to neighboring Burke County between 1800 and 1805. He appeared on the 1805 tax list of Burke County with two tithes and 400 acres of land. The two tithes were presumably Lawrence himself and his son Richard. [13] - According to the 1810 census of Burke County, his household contained the following: 1 male under 10 1 male over 45 [Lawrence] 2 females between 26 and 45 [Winifred and one other]. [14]

Lawrence Bradley died testate in Burke County, North Carolina in 1811, but his will does not survive. Edmond Tilley, a witness to the will, proved it. The qualifying executors were Winny Bradley and James Day. [15]

His widow, Winifred Bradley, lived in Captain Clinton Hartley's district in Burke County, North Carolina in 1815. She had no white polls, two black polls, and owned 150 acres on Lower Creek valued at $120. [16] She was still living in Burke County, North Carolina at the time of the 1820 census. Her household consisted of one white female above the age of 45 years. [17] She died in 1822.
