About Lazar Polacsek

The 1808 census of Jews (Conscriptio Judaeorum) in Huncovce is the first to mention Lazar Polatsek. His name suggests that he was a grandson of Lazarus who is mentioned between 1745 and 1788/89. After the tolerance tax of 1788/89, the son of Lazarus, Isaac Polatschek, is the only head of a Pollatschek household left in Huncovce. Thus, he is the only candidate for being the father of Lazar. The name of Lazar's son, Ignatz, a 19th-century kinnuy for Isaac, also suggests that he was a son of Isaac. If this is correct, then Lazar was born in or after 1788.

Lazar Polatsek and Ephrajem Polatzek are the only two Polatseks mentioned in Huncovce in the 1828 property tax list.

A tax list from 1836 calls him Lazar Sr. to prevent confusion with his nephew Lazar Jr., the son of Ephraim. The 1838 census mentions that Lazar Ephraim Polatsek had emigrated. Thus, later documents that mention Lazar, probably refer to Lazar Sr. In 1843, for example, he signs a document in Yiddish as the judge (richter) Leser Pollatschek. In 1857, he is the godfather at the circumcision ceremony of his grandson, a son of Aron and Rosa.

The registration of deaths in Huncovce starts in 1833. Lazar does not appear in it, suggesting he died elsewhere.
