About Leontine Friderike Henriette Hoffmann

Hello, dear readers, I´m trying to locate Penelope Daintry who posted this message on 18.09.2012:

My Great-Grandfather (George Cottam), worked at the Kreenholm Mill from the 19th Century, and was then the Manager for many years leading up to the Revolution in Russia. The story passed down through the family is that my Grandfather and Great-Grandfather were eventually smuggled out of Russia by their serfs who hid them in sacks, in 1917. Meanwhile my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother left on a ship that returned to England via Finland - carrying what silver they could inside their garments.

any info is more than welcome

Here is an account of "Marienhof" because Leontines
husband was "Papachen" Hoffmanns grandson :

near the little church Klein St Marien in northern Estonia (today the churc=
h is called Vaike Maarja Virgin Mary kirik) my ancestor ,Peter Johann "Papa=
chen" Hoffmann, in 1817 bought a humble estate which he called"Marienhof ". PJH was a merchant from Reval/Tallinn . PJH opened a shop at "Marienhof" and as there was no competition he became =
rich in no time . A proper manor house was built- a long wooden building that can be seen eve=
n to-day.=20 PJHs son, Georg, erected a small building for officials. In that building (?), the first Klein Marien/V=E4ike -Maarja school for gir=
ls was opened in 1902.=20 The place as well housed the first hospital in Klein Marien/V=E4ike-Maarja =
with four beds .=20 A Hoffmann worked as a doctor at that hospital.

In 1891, probably because of the competition by the newly opened railway-li=
ne, "Marienhof" was sold by "Papachens" son Georg , to an Estonian called J=
aan Allik who had become wealthy on running a tavern.

Obviously, the place has suffered a lot since then - though the attached dr=
awing of 1978 shows that quite a bit was left even after those 100+ years But, when my Estonian friend Uku drove up there in 2009 to kindly take some photos the place looked rather poorly, indeed. From the fifties until the end of Soviet time (1991) Marienhof (or Muuriku =
Mois ) was part of a colchos.
