  • Demaris Stukely's father was Sir Lewis Stukeley (1518-1620), Vice Admiral of Dover and cousin to both Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Richard Grenville. He was also the guardian of the infant son of John Rolfe and the Indian princesss Pocahontas. There is some dispute as to his ancestry. Burke's Discontined Peerages and Baronetcies indicates his father was Sir Hugh Stukeley (1488-1422) of Affeton Castle and mother was Elizabeth Chamberlin, daughter of Richard Chamberlin and Anne Downes. There is some dispute as to Sir Hugh"s ancestry. Burke's indicates that his father was Peter Stukely of Marsh and his gfather was George Stukeley of Marsh. His gmother was Joan Luttrell, daughter of Sir James Luttrell and Elizabeth Courtenay (1430-1493), who was a descendent of multiple royal lines including the Kingdoms of Leinster, Scotland, France, Castile and Edward I and Henry III of England. Sir Lewis's son, Lewis Stukeley Jr (1544) was a cleric of some type, father of Mary Stukeley, married to Guy Westcott, son of Edward Westcott and Demaris Stukely. Edward Jr. married Margery Arscott (1548), who was a descendent of Arthur Plantagenet, Viscount Lisle (1461), illegitimate son of King Edward IV, who was married to Elizabeth Grey (1465-1525), who was herself a descendent of a long line of nobility and royalty.

  • It appears to us that the name of this family varied more than most. Nevertheless, BP1934 uses "Stucley" throughout whilst Vivian mainly uses Stewkley for the early generations but moves to "Stucley" for the later generations of most of its branches. When we first prepared this page we used "Stukeley" as that was probably the most common version used in references to the family from elsewhere. This page was reviewed in July 2012 using Vivian. At that time we considered renaming the page "Stucley1" but decided to retain it as above.
