BIOGRAPHY Louis was born in Paris on 5 May 1714, the son of Louis Antoine de Brancas, duc de Villars, and Marie Angélique Fremyn. He was comte de Maubec and comte de Lauraguais, but became duc de Lauraguais in July 1731. On 27 August that year he married Adelaide Geneviève d'O, marquise de Franconville, daughter of Gabriel-Simon d'O, seigneur de Bazemont, and Anne Louise Félicité de Madaillan de Lesparre. They had two sons, Louis Léon Félicité and Buffile Antoine Léon, who would both have progeny.
Adelaide Geneviève died on 26 August 1735, and on 29 January 1742 Louis married Diane Adélaide de Mailly, daughter of Louis de Mailly, marquis de Mailly, prince d'Orange et de l'Isle-sous-Montréal, and Armande Félice de La Porte Mazarin, lady-in-waiting to Louis XV's queen Marie Leszczynska of Poland. Diane was dame d'atours (mistress of the robes) to Madame la Dauphine, Infanta Maria Teresa of Spain, and briefly became the mistress of Louis XV. In 1744 she and Louis de Brancas had a son whose name is not recorded and who died in 1749. Louis became colonel of the infantry regiment of Artois on 10 March 1734, brigadier on 20 February 1743, colonel of the infantry regiment bearing his name on 6 March that year, and its brigadier on 1 May 1745. He became a knight of the Spanish chapter of the Order of the Golden Fleece on 1 January 1746, and lieutenant-general on 10 May 1748. On 18 February 1751 he was received into the Parliament as a peer, appointed as governor of Guise on 2 September 1758, and entitled as Duc de Brancas on 19 February 1760.
Louis' wife Diane died on 30 November 1769, and on 29 June 1772 Louis married Wilhelmine van Neukirchen gen. Nijvenheim, who had been canoness of Boue in Cléves, and of Orzindorf in Vesel. In 1775 they had a son Louis-Albert, who in 1797 married Henriette-Pauline de Monestay de Chazeron, but did not have progeny.
Louis died in Paris in December 1793.
