Daughter of Joseph Smalley (1712-1783) and Jemima Ordway (1715-1788). She was a 5th generation descendant of Constance Hopkins, who with her brother Giles, father Stephen Hopkins, step-mother Elizabeth Fisher and step brothers, Demaris and Oceanus, arrived on the Mayflower. Raised in a Pomfret, Connecticut, she married Timothy Durkee there in 1758. By 1780, they had relocated to Royalton, Vermont.
