DESCENDANTS Mother of Samuel Judkins and Robert Judkins Sr Died before 4 Mar 1678 in Surry County, VAmap

Biography There is no evidence that Lydia's marriage to Capt. Thomas Pitman produced any children. Thomas had several children by his 1st wife Frances, and after her death married Martha Gwaltney (also see Mary Gweltna), and married Lydia after Mary's death in 1672.[1]

Lydia Grey/Gray was most likely born after 1640 (interpolation). She was the daughter of William Gray (1622-1714, Surry County, VA), who married her mother Mary? Margaret? after 1640. They had 4 children, Lydia, Gilbert (1640-1710), John (1650-1708) and Thomas (1652-1717).

Lydia's father William was the son of Thomas Gray (1593-1658). Thomas and his wife "Margaret" are mentioned in Musters of the Inhabitants in Virginia 1624/25 as having two children, "Jone, a daughter aged 6 yeares," and "William, a sonn aged 3." (I put quotes around the name "Margaret" because Thomas' wife is also noted as "Avis," "Anis," or "Annis" in other censuses, which could indicate either a census mistake or a different mother).[2]

Lydia is also mentioned elsewhere as the daughter of William Gray and the wife of Samuel Judkins.' Based on examination of the tithables in Surry County, Samuel Judkins probably died after 13 Feb 1671. His LWT, for which Lydia was appointed executor, was probated after 7 May 1671.[3]

He and Lydia had 3 sons, all of whom are mentioned in his will:[4]

Samuel, listed as tithable 1674, which means he was born before 1659, probably 1657/58. He was appointed constable 5 May 1675[5]; his will was probated 18 May 1705. Robert, listed as tithable for the first time in 1677, which places his birth around 1660-1661.[6] His will was probated 19 May 1693, at Surry County, Virginia.[7] Charles, a minor when his father died. All three sons were listed as eligible for infantry militia duty in 1687.[8]

Lydia married Thomas Pittman-1252 shortly after her late husband's will was probated on 10 September 1672.[9]

Lydia's death can be fixed with relative certainty as before 4 March 1678, on which date Thomas appeared in court to record the property which he conveyed to his step-son Charles at the bequest of his wife,[10]

In July 1674, the court ordered the transfer of Lydia's youngest son Charles' portion of his father's estate from Thomas Pittman to his oldest brother Samuel.[11] Evidently the surety for the estate of Charles was transferred to Edward Pettway, Samuel's new father-in-law two months later in 1674.[12]

Biography from combined record: While many trees have Lydia as the daughter of William Gray and Mary Elizabeth Jarrett, dates do not work to have this relationship. I am removing them as parents.

Daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Anis) Gray per research done. According to "Historical Southern Families," Vol. XVII (available for viewing at VA State library in Richmond), Thomas Gray, Sr, ancient planter of Surry County, VA was married four times: first to Anis or Avis Valentine, children Joan Gray (b.1618) and William Gray (b. 1621 and died as a young man/older teen); second to Margaret ____ (no children listed - maybe this is where Lydia comes in?); third to Rebecca _____, children Thomas Gray (b. 1625), Rebecca Gray (b. 1628), and Francis Gray (b. 1630); and fourth, to unknown wife who mothered William Gray (YES - a different one, b. 1648), John Gray (b. 1651), and Thomas Gray (YES - also a different one, b. 1652). There are many records indicating this at the State Library.

When Samuel died, his two year-old son Charles was left without a father. Lydia remarried before she died in 1677/8 and lived in the Lawnes Creek parish of Surry County. Her death left Charles an orphan. Her second husband, Capt. Thomas Pittman, Sr., was given custody of the young boy, on Mar 14, 1678, at the request of his deceased wife.

There is no evidence that Lydia's marriage to Capt. Thomas Pitman produced any children. Thomas had several children by his 1st wife Frances, and after her death married Martha Gwaltney (also see Mary Gweltna), and married Lydia after Mary's death in 1672.

Lydia is also mentioned elsewhere as the daughter of William Gray and the wife of Samuel Judkins. Based on examination of the tithables in Surry County, Samuel Judkins probably died after 13 Feb 1671. His LWT, for which Lydia was appointed executor, was probated after 7 May 1671.[3]

from Volume IV, page 535 of "Genealogies of Virginia Families': His widow, Lydia Judkins, married in the fall of 1672 Thomas Pittman, Sr., Gent., called variously Lieutenant a nd Capt. Thomas Pittman (marriage contract dated Sept. 10 , 1672, D. & W. 1672-84,p. 20), and was dead prior to Mar.4 , 1678/9, when Lieut. Pittman 'at the request of his deceased wife' transferred property to Charles Judkins, orphan ( id., p. 201).

Comments

It is thought that this is the Lydia that married Samuel Judkins, Thomas Pitman: But because of the dates the Judkins/Pitman's Lydia is actually the daughter of Thomas "AP" Gray. The is evidence based on some Judkins's wills, as well as som Gray wills, that make her more likely. The birthdate of this Lydia also makes her 9 Samuel Judkins Jr is born and couldn't be his mom..
