  • Thomas' widow, Lydia, married John Spring of Watertown, Massachusetts, about 1654, and then continued to live in Scituate. Plymouth Colony Records dated 6 October 1659, state:
  • A Court Order
  • After her marriage to John Spring, her second husband, Lydia lived for three or four years apart from him in Scituate when, on 6 Oct 1659, the court ordered that "she either repair to her husband with all convenient speed or repair to Duxburrow to the house of Mr. Alden on the 20th of the present month of October to give a reason why she does not." She was still living in Scituate in 1665. (Plymouth Colony Records, Court Orders, vol 3, page 174).
  • Conserning a certaine woman, viz', the wife of John Spring, of Watertown, which was sometimes the wife of Thomas Hatch, of Scittuate, which the said woman hath lived about three or four years att Scittuate from her husband. The court haue ordered that shee either repaire to her husband with all convenient speed, or to repair to Duxburrow to the house of Mr. Alden, on the twentyeth of this p'sent month of October, to give a reason why shee doth not; and incase shee shall refuse to attend this order, the Court will take a speedy course to send her to her husband.(39)
  • "Evidently Lydia satisfied the authorities for her reasons for living apart from her husband for in 1665 she was still living in Scituate when, as Lydia Spring, she took oath to the statements which her son-in-law, Jonas Pickles, made to her as to his wishes regarding the disposition of his property after his death."(40) Pope incorrectly identifies "widow, Grace Hatch" as the widow of Thomas Hatch of Scituate in 1646 when he wrote "He [Thomas] died before June 14, 1646, when child Hanna was baptized inventory presented by widow Grace May 27, 1661.(41) The 1661 inventory presented for Thomas Hatch by Grace was for Thomas Hatch "of Barnstable, lately deceased."(42) It appears that Pope missed the fifteen-year time difference between the baptism of Hannah and the presentation of the inventory of Thomas Hatch of Barnstable. In addition to the court record above, there is another reference to Lydia Spring in the baptism record for Daniel Pryor, grandson of Thomas and Lydia. See the reference under Mary Hatch below.

  • 9. WILLIAM HATCHE (Thomas, John the Younger, Thomas, Thomas, John), baptized at Tenterden, co. Kent, 9 Dec. 1563, was living 27 Dec. 1611, when his brother Thomas made his will, but died before 13 Feb. 1627/8, when his daughter Mary was licensed to marry William Sudell. He married, probably about 1593, ANNE —— , who was living as his widow at Tenterden 22 Jan. 1629/30, when her daughter Anne was licensed to marry John Beadle of New Romney. The will of John Hatche, the testator of 1628/9, names his brother William's children.

    • i. .... etc.
    • 10. ii. THOMAS, second son, b. abt. 1596.

  • 10. THOMAS HATCH (William, Thomas, John the Younger, Thomas, Thomas, John), of Wye, co. Kent, and Scituate, Mass., born, probably about 1596, died in New England before 14 June 1646, when his widow brought her daughter Hannah to be baptized.* He married, probably about 1622 LYDIA —— . He lived for a while at Wye, where in 1626 and 1628 two of his children were baptized. .... The date of his emigration to New England is not known; but he may have come with his brother William, on his second trip to New England, in the Castle, in 1638. He settled at Scituate, and was proposed as a freeman 5 Mar. 1638/9.
  • His widow, Lydia, married secondly, abot 1654, John Spring of Watertown, Mass., but continued to live in Scituate. About her the Plymouth Colony Records, uner date of 6 Oct. 1659, have the following: "Conserning a certaine woman, viz", the wife of John Spring, of Watertowne, which was somtimes the wife of Thomas Hatch, of Scittuate, which said woman hath lived about three or foure yeares att Sicttuate from her husband, the Court have ordered, that shee either repaire to her husband with all convenient speed, or to repaire to Duxburrow to the house of Mr Alden, on the twentyeth of this p'sent month of Octobert, to give a reason why shee doth not; and incase shee shall refuse to attend this order, the Court will take a speedy course to send her to her said husband."† Evidently she satisfied the authorities as to her reasons for living apart from her husband, for in 1665 she was still living in Scituate, when, as Lydia Spring, she took oath to the statements which her son-in-law, Jonas Pickles, made to her as to his wishes regarding the disposition of his property after his death.
    • Children:
    • i. WILLIAM, b. in England abt. 1624; emigrated with his parents to New England; lived at Scituate and later at Swansea, Mass.,
    • * Much confusion has arisen and numerous errors have appeared in various printed works regarding two settlers in Plymough Colony named Thomas Hatch. Besides Thomas Hatch of Scituate, there was a Thomas Hatch, an early propietor of Dorchester, Mass., who was propounded as a freeman 14 May 1634. (Massachusetts Bay Records, vol. 1, p. 369.) He removed to Barnstable, where he was propounded as a freeman 1 June 1641. At Barnstable, in Aug. 1643, he was on the list of those able to bear arms, that is, he was between 16 and 60 years of age. He had land in both Yarmouth and Barnstable, and took the oath of fidelity in Yarmouth in 1657. he died about 1660, and on 7 May 1661 his widow Grace presented his inventory. On 3 Mar. 1662/3 administration on his estate was granted Jonathan Hatch and to Lydia, wife of Henry Taylor, who were without doubt his children. (Plymouth Colony Records, Court Orders, vol. 4, p. 31.) This Thomas Hatch of Dorchester, Yarmouth, and Barnstable did not belong to the Hatch family of Scituate, which came from co. Kent.

  • HATCH, WILLIAM - Elizabeth French, "Genealogical Research in England - Hatch," NEHGR 70:156, has taken the Hatch family back to John at Hecche of Kent, England, born ca. 1415. Elder William Hatch was born ca. 1598, probably in County Kent, the son of William and Anne Hatch. He sailed for Plymouth in March 1634/35 in the Hercules, with his second wife, Jan (Young), five children and six servants, and he settled at Scituate. He became a freeman on 5 January 1635/36, and in 1643 he was chosen the first ruling elder of the Second (Vassall's) Church at Scituate. In 1643 he also became a lieutenant in the Scituate military company. He died at Scituate 6 November 1651. His first wife is unknown. His widow Jan married (2) Elder Thomas King of Scituate. Hatch had seven children, six by his second wife, two of whom died young in England. Other members of his family came to Plymouth Colony, including his brother Thomas Hatch and Thomas's wife Lydia, and to Scituate; his sister Elizabeth (Hatch) Soan who became the second wife of John Stockbridge of Scituate; and his cousin Lydia Huckstep, who came to Scituate with her husband Nathaniel Tilden. In a footnote, p. 256, Miss French removes some of the confusion concerning two Thomas Hatches who settled in Plymouth Colony. This second Thomas Hatch, apparently unrelated to the above Hatch family, settled first in Dorchester, then in Yarmouth, and finally in Barnstable, leaving a widow Grace and children. _______________

After her marriage to John Spring, her second husband, Lydia lived for three or four years apart from him in Scituate when, on 6 Oct 1659, the court ordered that “she either repair to her husband with all convenient speed or repair to Duxburrow to the house of Mr. Alden on the 20th of the present month of October to give a reason why she does not.” She was still living in Scituate in 1665. (Plymouth Colony Records, Court Orders, vol 3, page 174). [1]

Date of birth has also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1598 and 1599.

Date of death has also been erroneously reported to be 1646.

John Spring then married Lydia (___), widow of Thomas Hatch of Scituate, about 1655. [1] [5] [2] Lydia must have found life with John unpleasing, because she left Watertown in 1655. She was ordered by the Plymouth Court to ‘repair to her husband with all convenient speed or give reason why she doth not’, four years later, in October 1659. It is unknown whether she complied with the court's order. [1] [5] [2]. John's date of death is yet to be learned, but he was living on 6 October 1659, when his wife Lydia was ordered to return.
