About Melissa Van Hyning

Sylvester VanHyning, Henry VanHyning's youngest son, who had married Melissa Hollister in May 1837, built his home referred to as the "old homestead" in front of Henry's log house. Since Melissa spent the first two and a half years of her married life in the home of pioneer Henry VanHyning, she was a prolific source of information concerning the activities of his life. When on Christmas Day 1839, Henry did not respond to a call to breakfast, it was Melissa who discovered he had passed away, seated in his favorite chair, with his Bible in his lap, and his spectacles in his hand. Although his tombstone shows Henry VanHyning was 102 years old and died on 25 December 1840, this date is incorrect as his will was probated 2 July 1840. Therefore, the Summit County history is correct which gives his date of death as 25 December 1839 at age 102. Sylvester VanHyning, the youngest son, inherited the 150-acre farm on which he, his wife Melissa, Henry Sr. and Prudence had been living. Melissa died of dropsy at age 82.
