Biography

  • Margaret Post was born February 21, 1653, in Saybrook in the Colony of Connecticut.
    • She is the daughter of John Post and Hester Hyde.[1]
  • Margaret Post was born Saybrook, 21 February 1653,
    • eldest daughter of John and Hester (Hyde) Post.[2]
  • In 1659, the congregation at Saybrook obtained permission to establish a new settlement in the Colony of Connecticut. Rev. James Fitch was the first minister of the new church and took a large number of the Saybrook congregation with him to Mohegan in 1660.
  • Margaret and her family followed Rev. Fitch, as they had before. Her father was one of founders of Mohegan in 1660. Their home lot was across the street from her grandfather and uncle on the Hyde side and her uncle on the Post side was just up the street.[3] Two years later, the town became known as Norwich.
  • Margaret's grandfather, William Hyde, married Mrs. Joanna Abell, in Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, on June 4, 1667. Joanna and her younger children (Caleb, Joshua, Benjamin, Experience and Unknown) came to live with William in Norwich.
  • Margaret married Caleb Abell in Jul 1669, probably in Norwich.[4]
    • They had nine children.[5]
  • In July 1669 she married Caleb Abel the first of Norwich, Connecticut, who removed there from Dedham in 1668.
  • Margaret and Caleb purchased the home lot of Robert Wade in Norwich, 6 acres, 16 rods in front, right across from William and his mother.[6]
  • Margaret (Post) Abell died November 1700 in Norwich.
    • She is buried in the Old Norwichtown Cemetery.[7].
  • On 25 Jun 1701, after her death Caleb Abel married (2) Mrs. Mary Loomer widow of Stephen Loomer and daughter of George Miller of New London. No known issue.
    • Caleb died at Norwich on 17 Aug 1731.

Children of Caleb and Margaret[8]:

  • Daughter b. March 1671 d. the same month
  • Samuel b. Oct 1672 at Norwich, m. Elizabeth Sluman
  • Experience b. Dec 1674 at Norwich, m. John Hyde
  • Caleb b. Apr 1677 at Norwich, m. Abigail Sluman
  • John b. Dec 1678 at Norwich, m. Rebecca Sluman
  • Theophilus b. Nov 1680 at Norwich, m. Anne Calkins
  • Joanna b. Nov 1683 at Norwich
  • Margaret b. abt 1685 at Norwich, married Richard Douglas
  • ++ Mary b. abt 1685 at Norwich m. Joseph Tracy [NO]
  • ++ Benjamin b. about 1687, at Norwich, m. Lydia Hazen [NO]
  • Abigail b. 16 Mar 1689 at Norwich, m. Barnabus Lathrop, m2. Christopher Huntington
  • Hannah b. 12 Oct 1692 at Norwich
  • The above list (sorted but otherwise as given in Walworth) includes two children, Mary and Benjamin, attributed to Caleb and Margaret by Walworth but disputed by Abell. It also leaves out daughter Margaret named in Caleb's will.
  • Abell cites land records which show that Benjamin Abell m. Hannah left land to his son Benjamin Abell m. Lydia Hazen. This clearly shows that "m. Lydia Hazen" above is misplaced. Further, Caleb's will does not mention either Mary or Benjamin. Finally, neither one appears in the vital records of Norwich (as Caleb's children).
  • If Benjamin and Mary are the children of Benjamin Abell and Hannah, then their father died when they were 19 and 12, respectively (according to the estimated birth dates on page 55). Abell argues that the confusion likely arose because these two went to live with their uncle when their father died in 1699. Hannah, another sister, who was 20, went to live with their uncle Joshua and has ended up as his daughter in some genealogies.

Research Notes

  • Are the land records mentioned by Abell viewable online? Is Caleb's will (Will-Abell-2) available online? Is Benjamin's will (Will-Abell-1) available online? Presumably, Will-Abell-2 does not mention Mary and Benjamin and Will-Abell-1 does. Abell states that the vital records of Norwich do not show Mary and Benjamin. Do they show up as children for Benjamin Abell-1?

Hyde Genealogy, by Reuben H. Walworth, 1864, page 12

Comment: Mary, who married Joseph Tracy, is shown as Margaret Post’s daughter (below). This is likely an error, according to the Abell Family … Additionally, Caleb had son Noah Abell with 2nd wife Mary. This is omitted by Walworth in the Hyde Genealogy .
