About Margaret Calvert

Biography

Descendants of John Howard and Margaret Clarke

http://ncccha.org/pdf/howard/descendantsofjohnhowardandmargaretclar...

Margaret's first husband was John Hayward (Heyward). As seen in land patents of 1639, he settled in James City Co., Virginia.[6] According to Howard (1949), Margaret Clarke married John, "somewhere around 1650."

After John died, Margaret married William Calvert.[7] She passed away at York, Virginia

First Generation

1. John HOWARD (HEYWARD) [264] was born about 1615 in England and died on 8 Feb 1661 in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia about age 46.

General Notes:

John Heyward, Hayward, Haward, or Howard was the original ancestor of all the Howards mentioned in the book "Ten Generations of Virginia Howards," by Walter L Howard, Ph.D, of the 8th generation, of California, Yolo County, Davis, 1949.

Howard researchers are reasonably sure that he came from England but definite proof is lacking. When he was born is unknown so his birth year is an estimate going by the births of his children.

John was a member of the House of Burgesses of Virginia in 1659 and 1660, from Middle Plantation, now Williamsburg, Virginia. Their home was four to six Miles from Yorktown, the county seat of Virginia, York County.

John married Margaret CLARKE [265] [MRIN: 91] about 1650 in York County, Virginia. Margaret was born about 1615 in England and died about 1665 about age 50.

Parents

Margaret's parents are not known or valid sources have not been found. Some accounts indicate that she was born in England; and was the dau. of:

Richard Clarke,[citation needed]
and Ann Winston.[citation needed]

Marriage

Margaret married twice. Her first husband was John Hayward. She remarried to William Calvert.[5]

John Hayward held 600 acres of land in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia, by 1658.[5] John's property was near the line between Charles Parish and Warwick County, where he had a tan yard by the time of his death in 1661. William Calvert, who married Margaret after John's death operated the tan yard until his own death eight years later. Henry Hayward, Sr. the eldest son of John and Margaret, ran the tan yard during his adulthood. [6]

Hayward

As seen in land patents of 1639, John Hayward or Heyward, settled in James City Co., Virginia.[7] According to Howard (1949), Margaret Clarke married John, "somewhere around 1650."[8]

On 20 Sep 1635, John Hayward patented land in James City Co., "near the Rich Neck", on account of the adventure of his brother, Francis Hayward and others into the Colony. John was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1654. John's Will was proved 24 April, 1661, and mentions wife Margaret. Margaret married secondly, William Calvert, as appears from the will of Robert Calvert, (Will probated in 1666) who leaves legacies to the children of John Heyward. The Calvert family of York County came from Newark, in Nottinghamshire, where his brother George Calvert resided. [9]

Calvert

William Calvert's Will, recorded September 12, 1666, names Henry, William and Elinor "Howard" but not his wife, Margaret. It is likely that she had passed away before her second husband. Their son, Robert Calvert is left in the care of Charles Dunn, in accordance with William's Will. [14]
