Margaret (Harvey) (Wilcockson) Hayden

  • Birth: 1611 Derbyshire, England
  • Death: unknown

William Wilcockson married by about 1633 Margaret Harvey, daughter of James Harvey of Ilkeston, Derbyshire & they came to Massachusetts Bay on the Planter in 1635 (on 2 April 1635, "linen weaver W[illia]m Wilcockson," aged 34, "Margaret Wilcockson," age 24, & Jo[hn] Wilcockson," aged 2, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Planter). They settled first at Concord, & then at Stratford.

They had 9 children: John, Joseph, Timothy, Samuel, Elizabeth Stiles, Hannah Hayden, Obadiah, Sarah Meigs, & Phebe Birdseye.

She married (2) after 1656 & before 22 Dec 1657 WILLIAM HAYDEN {1637, Hartford}.

Margaret was 1st cousin of RICHARD HARVEY {1635, concord} & of Mary (Harvey) Beardsley, wife of WILLIAM BEARDSLEY {1635, Concord}, and possibly sister of Anne Harvey who accompanied the Wilcocksons on the Planter in 1635.

It has been argued that the Wilcockson, Beardsley, & Harvey families had in England fallen under the influence of Rev. ADAM BLACKMAN {1639, Stratford}, who was in the 1630s minister at Heage, Debbyshire, about 8 miles northwest of Ilkeston.

Disputed Origins

Margaret's maiden name, often shown as Birdseye, appears to actually be Harvey. Anderson relies on the not-yet-published work of Jane Wilcox, From England to America: The Odyssey of the William and Margaret Wilcockson Family which will report that Margaret's maiden name was Harvey.[1]

Origins

From http://www.4getmenotancestry.com/the-grand-wilcockson-tour-to-derby...

”In September 2017 I led a tour to Derbyshire, England, in search of my Puritan ancestors William Wilcockson and his wife Margaret. They came to New England on the Planter in 1635 with their two-year-old son John Wilcockson and Ann Harvie, whom I believe to be Margaret’s sister. They came during the Puritan Great Migration 1620-1640. With them on the Planter were Margaret’s first cousins Richard Harvie and his sister Mary Harvie with her husband William Beardsley and their three children Mary, John and infant Joseph. ...”

Older Notes

According to Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs: A Record of ..., Volume 1, edited by Cuyler Reynolds

"...William Wilcox or as the family name was written at that time Wilcoxson and his wife Margaret came with their son John to America according to Hotten's list of immigration in April 1635 aboard the ship Planter bearing a certificate from the minister of St Alban's in Hertfordshire England although the family is said to be originally of Welch extraction In the certificate their ages are given as follows William Wilcoxson linen weaver aged 34 Margaret Wilcoxson aged 24 Jno aged 2..."

Although the Internet widely gives Margaret Wilcoxson's birthname as "Birdseye," I have found no documentation to that effect, and in fact, most reliable sources do not mention a maiden name or parentage for her. Their daughter, Phoebe, married a Birdseye, so that provides potential evidence for a relationship with the Birdeye family.

To appease those who rely upon Internet records that are unproven, since it is widely cited, I will list her maiden name as Birdseye tentatively, but she should NOT be attached to any specific parents, as there is absolutely no proof for that.

Margaret Wilcoxson arrived at age 24 with her husband William. Her parents are UNKNOWN. She was not the daughter of John Birdseye of New Haven certainly, or we would have a record. It is not proven that she is connected to Edward Birdseye and Abigail Dayton Birdseye either. Her parents, whoever they were, did not likely immigrate to America.

If you have proof of her parentage, we can connect her with her parents, but for now, I have disconnected her since none of the reputable sources support her having either set of parents.

Not the daughter of John Birdseye

———-

William was born about 1601 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, the son of William Wilcoxson and Anne Howdische. He married Margaret Birdsey about 1632 in England. [She was born about 1611, the daughter of John Birdseye and Elizabeth Andrews - Disputed.] About three years after they were married they departed for the American Colonies.

On April 5, 1635, William, along with his wife, Margaret, and two-year old son, John, sailed from London on the ship “Planter”. The ship arrived at Boston on May 26th of that same year. William and his family settled in Concord, Massachusetts, where sons Joseph and Timothy were born. They remained in Concord for about four years. From there, William became one of the original settlers of Stratford, Connecticut. Here, six more children were born to William and Margaret.

William was elected to serve his town as Deputy in the Connecticut Assembly. He was on intimate terms with Governors Winthrop and Bulkley.

William was a linen weaver.

At the very beginning of its settlement, Stratford was called Pequennocke, then changed to Cupheag Plantation and then to Stratford. The earliest map of Stratford, as it was in 1639, shows seventeen families living there. This map shows William Wilcoxson's lot in the central part of town.

William died early in the year 1652. All of his children were still young. John, the oldest, was only nineteen. Margaret remarried in 1663 to William Hayden of Windsor, Connecticut. He was a widower with three young children. They moved to Killingworth (now Clinton), Connecticut. Joseph, already the father of three children, followed his mother to Killingworth and settled there
