4. Margaret SHERBURNE Heiress of Stonyhurst 5 488 (Richard DE Knight ((Sir)) 2, John DE M.P., Knight ((Sir)) 1)

  • was born circa 1355 in Stonyhurst, Clitheroe, Lancaster, England and
  • died of Stonyhurst, Clitheroe, Lancaster, England.
    • Margaret married Richard BAYLEY,5 488 son of John BAYLEY and Wife of John (BAYLEY UNKNOWN, about 1377.5 488
      • Richard was born before 1358 of Lancashire, England and
      • died before 1388 of Stonyhurst, Clitheroe, Lancaster, England.

Margaret’s marriage to Richard de Bailey provided a male Shireburne descendant. Richard was born Oct.12, 1381 and named Richard after his father. The surname however became Shireburne rather than his father’s surname de Bailey. Margaret Sherburne then conveyed all her Shireburne estates and assets to her husband Richard Bayley (descendant of Ralph the Red) to be left to their only son and heir Richard. He was however given the more predominate surname Shireburne to perpetuate the mothers family name and secure the Shireburne inheritance. Margaret’s father in law John de Bailey (descendant Mitton) was the possessor of Stonyhurst at the time. He was the grandfather of Richard Shirburne. Richard Bailey, father of Richard Shireburne never had possession of Stoneyhurst. Richard Bailey died 3 years before his father and eventually his son Richard Shireburne inherited Stonyhurst directly from his grandfather John Bailey in 1391. https://thefamilydemitton.wordpress.com/the-baileys-and-the-shirebu...

Stonyhurt Estate:

The grounds are bounded by the River Hodder, the village of Hurst Green and Longridge Fell. The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty overlaps in places.[2]

The earliest deed for the estate dates back to 1200 A.D. when it was known as the "Stanihurst".[3] It passed through the Bayley family to their descendants, the Sherburnes, before passing into the hands of Thomas Weld of Lulworth. Already possessing a large estate, he donated it to the Jesuits in 1794 as a new home for their school, of which he was an old boy when it was located at Liege.[4] A junior branch of the Sherburnes, who had earlier fled to Oxford to build and dwell in Beam Hall, subsequently emigrated to New England, where they contributed in various ways to the early history of the United States;[5] these descendants included Henry Sherburne and John Sherburne.
