Surname Lawrence, not Tuttle

Some genealogies say that the maiden name of Mary/Marie, the daughter of Joanna Tuttle and wife of Thomas Burnham of Ipswich, was Tuttle, based no doubt on her mother's last name in Ipswich records. However, the passenger list of the ship on which Mary and her mother immigrated lists her name as "Marie Lawrence" and thus clearly establishes that Mary's maiden name was Lawrence and not Tuttle.[5][6]

Birth, Baptism, Parents

Flag of Hertfordshire (1925, adopted by county 2008)
Mary (Lawrence) Burnham was born in Hertfordshire, England.

All reputable secondary sources state that Mary was the daughter of Thomas Lawrence and Joanna (Antrobus) (Lawrence) Tuttle.[7][8][9] The evidence supporting that parentage include (1) the fact that the passenger list of the ship on which Mary and her mother immigrated indicates that they came from St. Albans, Hertfordshire and that their party included John Lawrence (17), William Lawrence (12), Mary Lawrence (9) and Joan Antrobuss (65),[5][6] and (2) the fact that the St. Albans Abbey parish records include entries for the marriage of Thomas Lawrence and "Jone Anterbus" on October 23, 1609, the baptism of children of Thomas and Joan/Joanna Lawrence named John in 1618, William in 1622 and Marie in 1625, and the burial of Thomas Lawrence in 1625.[10]

Marie Lawrence, the daughter of Thomas Lawrence and Joanna (Antrobus) Lawrence, was baptized at St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire on April 10, 1625.[11][12][7] She was very probably born shortly before that date in St Albans.

Immigration

Marie/Mary emigrated from England to New England in 1635 aboard the Planter. The list of persons enrolled on April 2, 1635 for voyage on the Planter included Marie (9), step-father John Tuttell (39), mother Joan Tuttell (42), brothers John Lawrence (17) and William Lawrence 12), half-siblings Abigail Tuttell (6), Symon Tuttell (4), Sara Tuttell (2) and John Tuttell (1), and maternal grandmother Joan Antrobuss (65).[5][6]

Marriage

Mary married Thomas Burnham.[7][8][9] No record of their marriage or marriage intentions has been found. Thomas's wife's first name is established by depositions by Thomas's wife, Mary Burnam, in 1659[13] and 1670,[14] deeds by Thomas and Mary Burnum to their sons in 1687, 1691 and 1692,[15] and Thomas's will and estate records, which refer to his wife/widow, Mary.[16] The fact that his wife was Mary Lawrence, the daughter of Joanna (Antrobus) (Lawrence) Tuttle, is established by, among other things, depositions in 1659 in which Mary Burnham referred to Joanna Tuttle, the wife of John Tuttle, as her mother, Sarah Martin referred to Simon Tuttle and Thomas Burnum as her brothers, and John Giddings referred to Thomas Bornoms as his uncle.[17]

Based on the estimated date of birth their first child (1643-1645), Mary and Thomas were probably married sometime in 1642-1644. Since Mary was baptized in April 1625, it is most likely that they were married in 1643-1644. Since Mary's parents and Thomas were residents of Ipswich during that time period, it is very probable that they were married in Ipswich.

Children

Mary and Thomas had the following children, all born in Ipswich:

  1. Thomas, b. about 1643-1645,[18] m. 1st February 13, 1665 Lidia Pengry,[19][20] m. 2d December 16, 168[5? 9?] Hester/Esther (Cogswell) Bishop,[19][20] d. February 21, 1728[21][20]
  2. John, b. about 1647, m. June 6, 1669 Elizabeth Wells in Ipswich, d. January 1703/4 in Ipswich. (See discussion and sources in John's profile.)
  3. Mary, b. about 1651,[22][9] m. October 9, 1702 John Clark,[23][9] d. probably February 1723 at Ipswich[9]
  4. James, b. about 1653,[24] m. about 1676[25] Mary ______,[26] d. June 30, 1729[27][28]
  5. Johanna/Joanna, b. about 1654,[29][9] m. 1st November 22, 1671 John Newmarsh Jr (as "Joanna Borman"),[30][9] m. 2d after March 31, 1682 Erasmus James of Marblehead[9]
  6. Abigail, b. about 1655[31][9]
  7. Ruth, b. July 1, 1657,[32][9] d. July 30, 1657 in Ipswich[33][9]
  8. Ruth, b. August 23, 1658,[32][9] m. June 30, 1678 John Carter in Woburn,[34][9] d. January 10, 1724 in Woburn[35][9]
  9. Joseph, b. September 26, 1660,[36][9] living in 1685,[9] probably died before September 1692[37][9]
  10. Nathaniel, b. September 4, 1662,[32][9] living in June 1687,[38] probably died before September 1692[37][9]
  11. Sarah, b. June 28, 1664,[32][9] m. August 6, 1684 Mesheck Farley[23][9]
  12. Hester/Esther, b. March 19, 1665/6,[39][9] m. about 1686 Matthew Perkins,[9] d. October 6, 1749[40][9]
  13. Pheby/Phebe, b. March 16, 1667,[32] presumably died before 1694[41]

Mary and Thomas may have had two additional children, as Mary's gravestone says that she was the mother of 15 children.[42] If so, the two additional children were presumably died before 1694, as they were not mentioned in Thomas's January 1694 will.[16]

Husband's Death

Mary's husband, Thomas, died on May 19, 1694.[43] Mary outlived him by 20 years.

Death and Burial

Mary (Lawrence) Burnham died March 27, 1715[42][8][7] and was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.[42][44] Her headstone reads: "MRS MARY BURNUM WIFE OF LIUEt THOMAS BURNUM DIED MARCH Ye 27 1715 AGED 92 YEARS MOTHER OF 15 CHILDREN & GRAN MOTHER OF 70."[42][44]

Research Notes

  • Although the Lawrence children have a proven Gateway connection to Charlemagne through the Lawrence-Bull line,[45][46] the Lawrence Gateways to Charlemagne via Alice of Normandy ((Lawrence) Giddings, Jane, Lawrence, (Hon), John, Lawrence, Thomas, Lawrence, William, and this profile's (Lawrence) Burnham, Mary were removed from Magna Carta Base Camp on 1 September 2020. They are listed in RA III: 551-552, but do not have a proven Magna Carta connection.
  • See research notes on the profile of John Lawrence, whose parents were removed per https://groups.google.com/g/soc.genealogy.medieval/c/FMTJjk4kNfs and other discussions. As of 1 September 2020, Lewis still shows the connection https://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p2355.htm...
  • Previous note: Ancestor: William "Earl of Surrey" de Warenne - not a valid connection at this time. the ancestors for the Lawrence children, Jane, John, Thomas, William and Mary/Maria, although Lewis shows them as William Lawrence and "Katherine Beaumont," he gives no sources for them; Richardson does not show parents for John, or a baptism date.
