About Marie-Marthe Hubert
In the Spring of 1664 on the Ile of Orleans, an Amerindian, Robert Hache attacked and raped Marie Marthe Hubert. The rapist was captured and thrown into jail in Queec, but he managed to escape.
A court hearing was held including various Indian Chiefs, Nicolas Marsolet as Interpreter, and the Jesuit Priest Gabriel Druillettes.
The court felt that Robert Hache should die for his crime, but the Indians felt that only murder should bring a death sentence.
In the end the Indians promised to better follow the laws of the French, and no punishment was given to Robert Hache.
