Marmaduke Daniel, (Curator note: an Englishman theoretically but there is no evidence of his nationality without evidence of his parents, whom are unknown. Note that WikiTree refers to him as a “white man” only), married Nannie Still a "full blood Cherokee" and had a son James, of mixed blood, who married Mary Buffington, a mixed blood Cherokee. Mary was the daughter of Ezekiel Buffington, an English American trader who immigrated from Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Mary Emory, who was 1/4 Cherokee. Mary Emory was the granddaughter of Ludovic Grant, a Scotsman and early trader.

In the note the military person writing about 1831 to Governor Gilmore of Georgia called him a "celebrated Mississippi freebooter who only desisted when he could no longer continue his robbery and piracy upon that river with impunity. He afterwards sought an asylum in the Cherokee Mountains and identified himself with the Indians by taking to himself one of their Squaws." Source:J.W.A. Sanford letter book, Georgia College Library, Milledgeville.

A note about Marmaduke from the papers of Dr. Pritchett: "Marmaduke had a large family and ran a school in his home to educate his children. This happened in the 1760's & 70's.His family seems to have all moved South or West. It appears that Marmaduke Daniel moved to North Carolina with his family after the Revolutionary War."(this will need some checking to see if the above Marmaduke is a correct assignment), taken from "Whites Among the Cherokees, Georgia 1828-1838" edited by Warren and Weeks.

Research Notes:

  • the birthdate of Marmaduke ranges from 1736 to1766
  • WikiTree shows two conflicting dates, 1766 as a birthdate and 1736 in the bio
  • dates of his children are established in Our Family Tree” beginning in 1787.
  • conclusion therefore is that 1736 and 1750 are too early as his first child would hav3 been born at age 47-51. The date 1766 with first child born at age 21 appears more reasonable
  • Blood: Non-Cherokee
  • Occupation: March 11, 1797, Licensed hireling to [Ellis] Harlin
