Family

Mary, the wife of Thomas Caswell, has unknown origins. Specifically, she is not proven to be Mary Bryant, Mary Scadding or Mary Sanderson. She married Thomas Caswell about 1647.

Estimate based on their first child being born February 1648.

They had the following children:

  • 1. M i Stephen CASWELL was born 15 Feb 1648 and died Sep 1714.
  • 2. M ii Thomas CASWELL was born 22 Feb 1650 and died Feb 1726.
  • 3. M iii Peter CASWELL was born 31 Oct 1652 and died Mar 1737.
  • 4. F iv Mary CASWELL was born 31 Aug 1654 and died after 10 Jul 1722.
  • 5. M v John CASWELL was born 31 Jul 1656 and died Mar 1714.
  • 6. F vi Sarah CASWELL was born 30 Nov 1658 and died after 26 Mar 1730.
  • 7. M vii William CASWELL was born 15 Sep 1660 and died Jun 1747.
  • 8. F viii Hannah CASWELL was born 14 Jul 1661 and died after 10 Jul 1722.
  • 9. M ix Samuel CASWELL was born 26 Jan 1663 and died Dec 1741.
  • 10. F x Elizabeth CASWELL was born 10 Jan 1665 and died after 12 Mar 1722.
  • 11. F xi Abigail CASWELL was born 27 Oct 1666 and died after 10 Jul 1722.
  • 12. F xii Esther CASWELL was born 11 Jun 1669 and died after 26 Sep 1728.

Disputed Origins

  • Mary Bryant Theory: Thomas Caswell's son Peter Caswell in a 1727 deed refers to his aunt Bryant. Also, Elizabeth Briant was a witness to the codicil of the Will of Thomas Caswell on 15 March 1696/7. This has led some researchers to reach the conclusion that Mary was born Mary Bryant. There was a Stephen Bryant living in Plymouth, and the first born son of Thomas Caswell was named Stephen; however, there is no known connection to this Stephen Bryant. There was also a John Bryant of Taunton married to (as his second wife) Elizabeth, who is the only actual known contemporary who could be this 'aunt Bryant.' But again, Bryant is a married name and the LNAB of this Elizabeth is unknown. So, even if Elizabeth Bryant is the 'aunt Bryant' of the deed and the Elizabeth Briant of the codicil, the LNAB of Mary would be unknown.
  • Mary Scadding Theory: It has been suggested that the LNAB of Elizabeth Bryant mentioned above might have been Elizabeth Scadding, a daughter of William Scadding of Taunton. The evidence is not much more than John Bryant and his wife Elizabeth was living on the land "the right's which was his father's & that which was William Scadding's." But there is no actual evidence at all that Elizabeth or Mary were daughters of William Scadding.
  • Mary Sanderson Theory: The Babbitt Family History stated that Samuel Caswell was son of Thomas Caswell and Mary Sanderson, daughter of John Sanderson of Boston.[1] No evidence has ever been found to support this statement. This is likely some strange confusion with his son Thomas Caswell Jr. who married Mary Jones and her mother was a Sanderson. The will of Robert Sanderson names a great-grandaughter Mary Caswell (which is likely the source of this Error, but of course this Mary Caswell was also a grandaughter of Thomas Caswell - not his wife![2]
  • A strong Clue: On 30 August 1667, Thomas Caswell and Mary his wife sold land in Taunton. The land was bounded by the land of Shadrach Wildbore, the land of Samuel Paul, the river to the south and the common on the North. The wording of the deeds makes it probable that the land was inherited by Mary. If the land and the previous holder can be identified, we will likely have identified Mary's parents.
