About Mary Lovina Palmer

Obituary

At the age of twelve years she, with her parents, moved to the township of Hume, Alleghany County, New York, where she resided until December 22, 1846, at which time she was united in marriage to Marcellus Palmer, who now survives her, this union continuing for a period of 64 years, 5 months and twenty-three days.
In September, 1864, she, with her family, moved from the State of New York to the city of Ionia, Michigan, where she resided until November, 1864, at which time the family moved to their new home in the township of Day, Montcalm County,Michigan, where she resided until the time of her death.
At an early age she, with her only sister, became converted and soon afterwards united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. So strong was her belief in the polity and principles of this church that she remained a steadfast member and did not unite with any other church, even though residing where there was no local organization of the denomination of her choice. At her home the first Sunday school in the township of Day was organized and its services there continued until the district school was organized and a school house constructed.
Her home was always open to travelers and seekers of homes in the forests of Michigan, as well as a refuge and place of rest to the clergymen of every denomination.
She had been in failing health for several years but insisted upon looking after her household affairs until the last year prior to her death, when the condition of her health was such as to make it impossible to do so longer. While there was a general breaking down of her physical strength, yet she was not troubled with any organic disease. her life's work was rapidly drawing to a close. About two weeks before her death the condition of her health was such as to cause her family and friends to become alarmed. She gradually became weaker but apparently suffered no pain until within two or three days before her death. it was apparent to her friends that she could not stay long. On the morning of her death as the members of her family, then at her home, came to her bedside she reached forth her arms and placed them around the necks of each and kissed them a silent good bye, and then turning her eyes heavenward soon passed into that home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens, thus causing a vacancy in a home she had occupied for nearly fourty-six years and from which two sons and a daughter had closed their eyes to this world and entered the joys of eternity.

Five children were born to her, only two of whom are now living, Francello A., of Jackson, Mich., and Lucian C., f Stanton, Mich., these with her husband, Marcellus Palmer, several grandchildren and a host of friends are left to mourn her loss.
