Matthieu and his wife were French Huguenots, who left France to escape religious persecution. This family lived in Holland and the West Indies before emigrating to Philadelphia.

Matthew, as he was known in Philadelphia, ran the Prince Eugene Tavern, which offered a billiard table for sale.

From "A History of Philadelphia 1609-1884 by John Thomas Scharf"

"In 1726, Matthew Garrigues, at the sign of Prince Eugene, in Second Street, advertised for sale "a new billiard table", certainly the first of which we have any account in the province."

Buried 6 Sept 1726
