About Mayor Elias Horry IV
Elias Horry IV was born on 21 Jun 1773 in Charleston, South Carolina. He died on 17 September 17, 1834 and was buried at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul's Churchyard, Charleston, SC.
He inherited a fortune from his father in plantations and other properties. His interest in Bull's Island came from his second wife, Mary Shubrick. He studied law in the office of Gen. CC Pinckney and was admitted to the Bar in 1773. He was Mayor of Charleston for 2 terms (1815/17), Member of South Carolina House of Representatives, President of the Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston, a Trustee of the Medical College, President of the Charleston Library Association, President of the St. Cecilia Society, and President of the SC Canal and Railroad Co. (1st engine was named "Elias Horry"). He had many other civic positions and honors.
Elias married to Harriet Vanderhorst on October 30, 1797 in St. Michael's Church, Charleston, SC. Harriet Vanderhorst was born on April 6, 1776. She died on August 6, 1815. She was buried in St. Michael's Church, Charleston, SC.
After Harriet's death, Elias married Mary Rutledge Shubrick, the daughter of Thomas Shubrick and wife Mary Branford. She was born October 23, 1789 and died January 14, 1852. She was buried beside her husband at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul.
