Mercy Tubbs

2. Mercy Sprague b. abt 1617 in England died after 1668 ~52 years married November 9 1637 in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA Wiliam Tubbs and then divorced. Children: William Tubbs, Jr.. William Tubbs 2nd wife was Dorothy Soames married March 23, 1672.

Divorced in 1668 from William Tubbs. Fled to Providence, Rhode Island. One of the first divorces from members of the Plymouth Colony.

The divorce decree clearly indicates that more than "dancing" was involved.

When the marital troubles began is not clear. But in Nov. 1653 William sold his home "with the consent of Mercy". This was not an ordinary procedure.As early as Mar. 1651/2 Mercy was before the Court "to answare for mixed dauncing".

William periodically petitioned for a divorce until 3 June 1668 when his pleas were recognized and notice sent to Mercy through the government at RI, where she was living, to return to William or lose all rights and claims against him.

He was divorced from Mercy SPRAGUE on Jul 7 1668 in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA.
