About Meyer (Meir ben Baruch Halevi Cassel) Goldschmidt

Meyer is first mentioned in 1627 with his father Benedict and mother Rosina, when he was only six years old (StA Marburg, Best. 17 I Nr. 3726). Thus he was born ca. 1621. In 1620, his father Benedikt Goldschmidt was already living in Kassel. He is number nine on a list of ten tax-paying Jews, Benedikt paying the largest sum (Hallo 1930). Thus, Meyer was born in Kassel. He was given right of residence in Frankfurt am Main on December 27, 1634, when he married (Dietz 1988: 149). His Yiddish family name Kassel proves that he is to be identified with the son of Benedict and Rosina. His tombstone calls him a parnas and mentions his Yiddish name, Meir Kassel (מאיר קאסל), as well as his Hebrew name, Meir ben Baruch ha-Levi (מאיר בן ברוך הלוי). He was married to Bella (בילה אשת מאיר קאסיל), the daughter of Asher Anshel Segal Buchsbaum (בת אשר אנשיל סג"ל ב"ב).
