Biography
Michael's origins are unknown, he has been attached as a son of a John Gater supposedly of Hillmorton but there is no proven connection between them. A John Gater did live in Hillmorton and his daughter Elizabeth was buried February 1604/05 in Hillmorton as "daughter of John Gater"≤ref>England, Warwickshire, Parish Registers, 1535-1984 Warwickshire Hillmorton Baptisms, marriages, burials 1564-1653 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6W23-W1Q?i=26&owc=...≤/ref> meaning she was under about 21 and therefore this John was more likely to be the son of Michael Gater who was born in 1579.
Michael Gater and Isabel Baylie, were the parents of JudithGater, who immigrated to America in 1631 on the Lyon. Michael and Isabel were married in Hillmorton, Warwckshire, England 13 November1576.≤ref>England, Warwickshire, Parish Registers, 1535-1984 Warwickshire Hillmorton Baptisms, marriages, burials 1564-1653 Image 19 of 33 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6W23-4XL?i=18&owc=...≤/ref> Ann Gater who married Thomas Wright on 29 July 1600 was probably also their daughter.≤ref>Walter Goodwin Davis, “The Ancestry of Dudley Wildes, 1759-1820, of Topsfield, Massachusetts”, Portland, Maine, 1959, page 87.≤/ref>
Michael and Isabel had the following children, who appear in the Hillmorton parish register freely available with original images at familysearch.org (the link to Alice's baptism is provided, the other childrenall appear on subsequent pages of the same register):#Alice Gater baptized 5 Feb 1576/77, buried 22 Mar 1576/77≤ref>England, Warwickshire, Parish Registers, 1535-1984 Warwickshire Hillmorton Baptisms, marriages, burials 1564-1653 Image 3 of 33 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6W23-8J5?i=2&cc=14...≤/ref>

Michael appears twice (at least) in legal records of Hillmorton, unfortunately not to his credit. In May 1603 Michael, his son Michael Jr. and John Twigger appeared as defendants in the case "Asteley v Gater. Plaintiffs: Mary Asteley late the wife of Isaac Asteley..." described as follows:
Plaintiffs: Mary Asteley late the wife of Isaac Asteley (or Asheley).≤br>Defendants: Michael Gater the elder, yeoman, constable of Knightley,Michael Gater his son, John Twigger, and others.≤br>Subject: Rabbit-poaching and destruction of vermin-traps and enclosures in plaintiff Mary Asteley's manor of Hillmorton, forcing the people of Hillmorton to maintain their cause against her, and altering the course of husbandry in the manor.≤br>Barnes category: destruction of property; unlawful assembly; maintenance.≤br>Another action was also brought before an ecclesiastical court.≤ref>National Archives Catalog STAC 8 - Court of Star Chamber: Proceedings, James I Reference: STAC 8/40/22 https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C5568876≤/ref>
In June 1604, he (or possibly his son, Sr/Jr is not specified) appeared again in the case "Attorney General v Gater. Plaintiffs: Sir Edward Coke, Attorney General at..." which reads:
Plaintiffs: Sir Edward Coke, Attorney General at the relation of Mary Astley.≤br>Defendants: Michael Gater, William Bromiche, Edmund Bromiche, Richard Warde the common herd of Hillmorton, Agnes Warde his wife, Henry Perkins and others.≤br>Subject: Turning the cattle of the town of Hillmorton into corn growing on the land of Mary Astley in Hillmorton.≤br>Barnes category: destruction of property; unlawful assembly.≤ref>National Archives Catalog STAC 8 - Court of Star Chamber: Proceedings, James I Reference: STAC 8/6/4 https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C5568201≤/ref>
Very likely this Henry Perkins was the father of John Perkins, who married Judith Gater, Michael Gater's daughter as Henry was not known to have a brother or son named Henry.
So we can say with certainty that he lived until May 1603 and an argument could be made that he died by June 1604 when Sr/Jr was not specified in the court proceedings but that would be purely speculation.
All other information about Michael Gater is from unsourced Ancestry trees:* Birth 1562 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England (note that Hillmorton parish registers only go back to 1564)* Death 1624 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England (note that he does not appear in the burial records between 1593 when his last known childwas born and 1653 in Hillmorton which means he either lived to 100+ years old or he was buried outside Hillmorton or his burial was just not recorded).
