About Miklos Freund

According to Leo and His Circle: The Life of Leo Castelli, by Annie Cohen-Solal, Miklós Freund was the first cousin of New York art dealer / gallerist Leo Castelli. Page 36 of the book describes how "[Hungarian Jews'] aggressive integration into secular life [following reforms initiated by Emperor Franz Josef] would tragically blind them to the sinister political developments of the twentieth century, which would in the end sweep away several generations of European Jews in one stroke. During the summer of 1943, Miklós Freund (Leo Castelli's first cousin), then in charge of the family's property in Göntér, would be snatched away with his pregnant wife, Leni, to the camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau."

The Leo Castelli biography also details how "the Jews of Siklos were among the first deportees, i.e. among the Jews who were 'cleared' from the southern border zone already in April 1943. From Siklos they were transported to one interment camp in Barcs" Page 31. The April 1943 round-up of "the Jews in the districts bordering Croatia" is described in The Politics of Genocide: The Holocaust in Hungary, Condensed Edition by Randolph L. Braham, Page 122.
