Mordechai Shatner

Mordechai Shatner (Hebrew: מרדכי שטנר‎, 1904 – 1964) was a Zionist activist and a signatory of the Israeli declaration of independence.

Biography

A member of kibbutz Ein Harod, Shatner worked in Europe between the First and Second World Wars rescuing Jews, a period during which he met Adolf Eichmann. After the outbreak of World War II he worked for aliyah from England.

After returning to Mandate Palestine, he joined the Vaad Leumi, working on national infrastructure. He campaigned against the treatment of Jewish prisoners held by the British, and was arrested during the Operation Agatha and imprisoned in the Atlit detainee camp, Rafah and Latrun. During that time he served as the representative of the Jewish detainees to the British authorities.

On 14 May 1948, Shatner was one of the people to sign the Israeli declaration of independence, and joined the Provisional State Council. After independence he worked on the development of Jerusalem, was one of the founders of Yad Vashem, and was also a member of the committee that appointed judges to the Supreme Court of Israel.

Shatner served as the CEO of the Department of Industry and Commerce, and was in charge of the financial market. He was also an interim supervisor of the real estate of the Arabs who fled Israel during the Independence War of 1948. He was the main figure in the foundation of the Israeli town of Nazareth Illit and the Wingate Sports Center that was named after his friend Orde Wingate.

The Shatner Centre in Jerusalem was named after him. His son, David, is an expert on water and the "borders of Israel" and was in the delegations that brokered peace agreements with Jordan, Syria and the Palestinian National Authority.

מרדכי שטנר (1904 - 1964), היה חבר קיבוץ עין חרוד (לפני הפילוג), נציג מפא"י בהנהלת הוועד הלאומי וחבר מועצת העם (שהפכה למועצת המדינה הזמנית עם הקמת המדינה) ומחותמי מגילת העצמאות.

שטנר שימש כשליח היישוב באירופה בין מלחמות העולם ועסק בהצלת יהודים. במשך עבודתו בא במגע עם בכירים במשטר הנאצי ביניהם אדולף אייכמן. במחציתה הראשונה של מלחמת העולם השנייה שימש כשליח עלייה באנגליה. לאחר מכן חזר לארץ והיה חבר הוועד הלאומי ותוך כדי כך עסק בנושאי תשתית, החדרת תוצרת הארץ, בטיפול באסירי היישוב העברי ועמד בראש אגודת לאסירינו. שטנר נאסר על ידי הבריטים במסגרת "השבת השחורה", הובל למחנה המעצר בעתלית ולאחר יומיים נשלח לרפיח, שם היה עצור במשך שלושה שבועות ושימש כראש העצורים היהודים כלפי השלטונות הבריטים במקום. עם פירוק המחנה נשלח למעצר עם הנהגת היישוב במחנה המעצר בלטרון.

בהמשך פעילותו הציבורית, בתקופה שלאחר הקמת המדינה, כיהן בתפקיד האחראי על פיתוח ירושלים, מנכ"ל משרד המסחר והתעשייה, ראש מועצה אזורית גלבוע, הממונה על שוק הביטוח וההון במשרד האוצר וכן כיהן כאפוטרופוס על נכסי נפקדים, שנקרא "מאגר הקרקעות בישראל". מוסד זה הפך ברבות הימים ל"מינהל מקרקעי ישראל". שטנר היה הדמות המובילה בהקמתה של העיר נצרת עלית והיה מששת מייסדי יד ושם. כמו כן, היה חבר בוועדה למינוי שופטים לבית המשפט העליון הראשון, עסק בנושאי תשתית בירושלים (מים, שיכונים, מקומות תעסוקה וכו'), והיה יו"ר הוועדה לבניית קריית הממשלה בירושלים.

על שמו נבנה "מרכז שטנר" בגבעת שאול שבירושלים, ברחוב שגם הוא קרוי על שמו.

בנו דוד שטנר הינו מומחה לנושאי מים וגבולות והשתתף במשלחות להסכמי השלום של ישראל עם הרשות הפלסטינית, ירדן וסוריה. בן אחר, שלמה שטנר, כלכלן ויזם, היה סגן הממונה על התקציבים באוצר והיזם והמתכנן של השינוי המבני בחברת דן.
