Nathan Bradley

Nathan Bradley was born in 1631 in Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony and died on 26 Jul 1701 in the same place. He married on 17 Jul 1666 in the same place that he died to Mary Evans who was born on 19 Nov 1640 in Dorchester to Richard Evans (1613-1662) and Mary Unknown (1610-c.1673) and also died in Dorchester. After his marriage the first record that we have of him was a purchase for 2 acres of land and a house of the Great Lots in Dorchester. He was the first Bradley in America to have an occupation on record which was that of Town Sexton of Dorchester in 1668. His job was to ring the bell of the meeting house and to clean the meeting house of Dorchester as well as to carry water for baptism; and as long as there was a bell to ring, he was paid 4 pounds a year.

Richard Evans was born in 1613 in Chiswick, England and died in 1662 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He married in 1641 in Dorchester to Mary Packard who was born in 1610 and died about 1673. The surname Evans are of Welsh origin and Evans means “son of Evan” and the Greek spelling is Evangelos. In the old Welsh language the v was pronounced as an f and was a patronymic name or an original name of Wals so it had “ab” or “ap” in front of it. The name Evans in old Welsh was spelled “ab or ap Ifan.” There is also a similarity of the old Welsh name Ifan and the Slavic name Ivan. The name Evans is popular not only in Wales but is also numerous in Cornwall, England].
