About Otto Goerz / Goers
He was a journalist and writer. Writing in particular about politics, Vienna history, and culture. He also did so while living with his parent’s and grandfather at Rembrandstrasse 31, until 1918. Taken from Lehmann’s Address Buch.
Otto changed his last name to Goerz. This is noted on his Verlassenschaft circa 1939. But it’s sometimes listed as Goers.
He had Diabetes and profound hearing loss. With this came nerve damage, dizzy spells, and nausea. This is part of the reason that he did not want to immigrate at all. He had no one in any other countries to go to, who could help him. At the time of his Viennese questionnaire, he lived with his mother who took care of him. He felt that immigrating would isolate him, and make his life miserable. But after being arrested in a coffee house, and held for several day’s, he realized he must immigrate. He was abused by the SS who eventually let him go. But was rearrested on another fraudulent charge, and told that if he did not leave, that he will be deported to Dachau!
Last address: 1020 Rembrandtstrasse 31, Vienna, Austria This was the same home that Samuel Goldschlager lived in at one time about 50 years earlier. Otto lived the rest of his life in this residence.
Buried in the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna. Tor 1, G20, R13, Tomb 55
