Peter Paul Labertouche was born in Dublin, Ireland and he was one of 8 children. His mother would have died when he was only 13. His father was Abel Labertouche who was a public notary by profession and a landowner and possibly quite wealthy, and his grandfather Abel William Labertouche Esq also owned land.
Peter Paul evidently had a good education. In 1852 at the age of 22 he arrived at the port of Brisbane on the ship FORMOSA as an unassisted passenger. This means he paid his own way to Australia. Quite possibly his older brother Abel arrived in 1859. A number of young Labertouches arrived in the 1880's possibly nieces.
In 1856 he was (noted on 1856 census) living in Lyndurst, Victoria as a single man earning 100 pounds a year on a Govt salary. He at this time apparently had freehold land in Elsternwick. Peter married Eleanor Annie Scales in 1859. He would have been about 30 and Eleanor possibly about 16 years.
They had 6 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. they appeared to live in the Carlton Brunswick area. One of his daughters, Ethel Adelaide, m. Augustus Pelham Brooke Loftus, second s. of the Rt. Hon. Lord Augustus Loftus, P.C., G.C.B., Governor of N.S.W., 1879-85, younger s. of the 2nd Marquess of Ely, and their son, Guy Alvo Greville Loftus, is heir presumptive to the present Marquess of Ely).
Peter Paul eventually was made Secretary of the Victorian Railways. The Labertouche Creek, and subsequently the town of Labertouche in Victoria (near Drouin) were named after him.
