Philadelphia SPILMAN, daughter and only known child of John and Elizabeth (BROWN) SPILMAN, was born 30 July 1772, in King George County, Virginia. Her grandfather, Thomas BROWN, willed "to my granddaughter Philadelphia SPILMAN and to her heirs forever," two hundred acres of land, part of an eight hundred acre tract cornering on the Ohio River. (Fredericksburg, Virginia Will Book A, p.80.)
Philadelphia SPILMAN married 10 June 1791 to Thomas NUGENT (or NEWGENT), born 10 June 1770, son of Edward and --?-- (CONWAY) NEWGENT. Thomas NUGENT was a surveyor and the first school teacher in Mercer County, Kentucky. Thomas and Philadelphia (SPILMAN) NUGENT had eleven children. He died 4 Feb. 1863 in Putnam County, Indiana. Philadelphia NEWGENT's grandfather, Thomas BROWN, "an innkeeper at the time of his death," of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia made his will 5 January 1790 (Proved 26 March 1790). "I give and bequeath to my loving wife Sarah BROWN all my Lotts and Houses in the Corporation of Fredericksburg during her life --- I give my "son-in-law William SPILMAN one hundred and seventy acres of land lying in the County of Lincoln and the south side of Kentucke river cornering on a tract of land of mine of five hundred fifty acres which I purchased of John CRAGGE and known by the name of Horse Shoe Bottom. --- to my granddaughter Philadelphia SPILLMAN two hundred acres of land part of an eight hundred acre tract of mine joining John SAUNDERS and cornering on the Ohio River and running with the said SAUNDER's line for quantity. --- to my granddaughter Elizabeth BROWN two hundred acres of land part of the above eight hundred acre tract still along the said SAUNDER's line to my corner. --- to my daughter Philadelphia BROWN four hundred acres of land, the remainder of the above eight hundred acre tract. --- I desire that my executors may sell the tract of land known by the name of the Horse Shoe Bottom and lying in the County of Woodford and containing now five hundred and twenty-five acres which I purchased from John CRAGGE and the money arising from the sale that they apply to the payment of my just debts. --- I desire that all my western lands both State and Military, not heretofore devised may be equally divided among all my children and (I) do appoint my loving wife Sarah BROWN my executrix and my friends Zachariah LUCAS, Fielding LUCAS, and Gustavus Brown WALLACE my executors. --- Thomas BROWN [seal]."
