This document lists Philip Albert Myburgh Hands of Diocesan College winning a scholarship ("Minor Exhibitions of £20, tenable for one year") at the University of the Cape of Good Hope, year ending 1906: http://uir.unisa.ac.za/bitstream/handle/10500/6345/UCGH_R1906.pdf?s....

This document (attached as a source) gives much information about the whole Hands family: https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10... - All 3 sons went to Diocesan College, played cricket and rugby for the national teams and all won Rhodes Scholarships. "Pam", as Philip was known, switched to accounting after obtaining a law degree at Oxford. They all served in WW1 (where Reginald was killed).

Became a major in the army during the war, but as he was not primarily a soldier by profession, this is not appended as a suffix.

Photo of parents' grave here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=140977103 - appears to show a memorial for (Major) P.A.M. Hands, d. 1951.
