About Phoebe Belcher

Phoebe Isham Belcher BIRTH 1648 Northamptonshire, England DEATH 29 Dec 1735 Henrico County, Virginia, USA BURIAL Unknown MEMORIAL ID 148501360

Phoebe Isham, possibly born in Pytchley, Northamptonshire England, in circa 1648, is said to be the daughter of Captain Henry Isham and his first wife, Elizabeth. Whether she arrived on the American continent, with her father, we’re not sure, though likely. There were other children, too. Edward or Edmund, and another female, identified as the wife of John Farmer of Bermuda Hundred, Henrico, Virginia.

She was not the daughter of Katherine Banks, widow of Joseph Royall. Her father’s second marriage took place after 1658, long after Phoebe was born. This second marriage also gave birth to more children. One daughter, Mary, became the wife of Giles Webb (died 1712) and then Colonel William Randolph II; a wealthy and learned man. Mary Isham and William Randolph were the great grandparents of President Thomas Jefferson.

Phoebe Isham married Robert George Belcher in 1669. Both lived in Henrico at the time. Robert, was a farmer; his main crop was tobacco... A standard of “currency” at the time. Phoebe died on December 29, 1735, in Henrico, Virginia.

Some discount that Phoebe was the daughter of Henry Isham because she wasn’t mentioned in his will… (I haven’t seen it). Nor Katherine’s, her step mother. True. Katherine's will only named her natural born children and grandchildren.

INTERESTING INFO: A fellow genealogy researcher in California, Jim Farmer has this to say as he was researching his Farmer Line. “Captain Henry Isham came to America with a grown daughter who married John Farmer at Bermuda Hundred, Henrico County, VA by 1656. This Isham daughter and John Farmer soon had three children: Henry Farmer (b1657), Phoebe Worsham, and Frances Elam. I was also surprised to see that the Belchers used not only the name Isham but also the name Phebe, just like the Farmers, Worshams, and Elams. Since then, I have seen the Henrico deposition showing John Belcher just like Henry Farmer, and I have found ongoing records for the Belchers and Farmers living as neighbors, which supports the fact that they were probably cousins. The name of John Farmer is a derived name. It appears in no record, but each of his children used the name and it is the name of his grandfather. Henrico depositions give Henry Farmer and John Belcher very close ages, “ It is likely that John Farmer and Robert Belcher married sisters. Isham, Bartley, and Phoebe are names that shows up throughout the Belcher line.

Phoebe Isham is the half sister of Mary Isham daughter of Henry Isham and second wife Katherine Banks: Mary married William Randolph. Mary and William Randolph were the parents of Isham Randolph. Isham Randolph married Jane Rogers. Jane and Isham Randolph were the parents of Jane Randolph. Jane Randolph married Peter Jefferson. Jane and Peter Jefferson were the parents of Thomas Jefferson, President of the USA

GEDCOM Note

Phoebe Royall by birth.

From the information that I am seeing, Katharine and Henry were married in 1658. Therefore, Phoebe must be Katharine and Joseph Royall's child. I imagine that she went by Isham because she would have been so young at her father's death and looked to Henry as her father.

From what I have read, Mary was the first child of Henry and Katharine.
