About Pvt. William Lewis Chandler
From the book: "History of Brownfield" by William Teg, D.P.T., D.O., PH.D (printed by Carbrook Press, Cornish, Maine 1966) William Lewis Chandler, the son of Lew and Roselle Chandler, was born in Wayne, Maine on Jauary 18th, 1839. He was A VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR, having enlisted Dec 14th 1861, as a private in Captain James B. Hill's company I-14th Regiment, Maine Volunteers, Infantry. He was wounded at Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and honorably discharged at New Orleans, October, 1863, on account of disability. Returning to his native New England, on March 5, 1865, he married Frances Augusta Bishop. She was born in Calais, Maine in 1845, but came to Brownfield as a child in 1851. Later, she went to Massachusetts where she met William Chandler. William and Frances lived in Lowell, Mass., for several years following their marriage, then returned to Brownfield, where they spent the rest of their lives. They purchased the Brackett Wentworth house in Goodwin Hill on the old County Road. This is one of the old houses still left in Brownfield. William and Frances Chandler had four children, one of whom died in infancy. Two daughters, Rissie and Rosie M. and a son, Lewis H. Chandler were left. Rissie Chandler married Elmer Blake of Brownfield; Rosie Chandler married Abel Eaton of Center Conway, New Hampshire. Lewis Chandler married Edna Stanley of South Hiram, Maine. William Chandler died in Brownfield on July 7th 1901; his wife died in 1935, also in Brownfield. Their son Lewis and his wife live on the home place on Goodwin Hill. They have a daughter, Beulah M. Chandler, who teaches in Scarboro, Maine; and a son Harold L. Chandler who is employed at the S.D. Warren Company of Westbrook. He married Corinne Fox of Lovell, Maine and lives with his family in Westbrook.
