“Rachel” Croshaw, of the Patawomeck

Oh, I should tell you that calling Rachel by the name of "Rachel Matachana Powhatan" is VERY wrong. Someone just made up that she was the daughter of Pocahontas' sister, Matachana, which is totally untrue. In fact, if she was the daughter of Powhatan's sister by the Great King of Patawomeck, she would not even have been a Powhatan but would have been a Patawomeck. Much of the early Indian genealogy is theory based on some fairly good facts, but there is also a great amount of totally fictional genealogy out there that you must be careful of. Do not ever relay on the Shawnee Heritage books, as they are riddled with made-up names and genealogy.

OMG Doesn't anybody believe in SOURCES, and GENEALOGICAL PROOF of any sort? Or is it all just invent the family connections you want?
Everyone wants to use Bill Deyo, Patawomeck Tribal historian as a source supporting "Rachel" but in the 7-24-2017 note above Deyo clearly says the information about her is incorrect, very wrong, untrue.

This "Rachel" has been put forward as the wife/mistress of Thomas West, 3rd Lord de la Warr, as the wife of Captain Raleigh Croshaw, and as both the mother and the wife of Joseph Croshaw, all of which are incorrect.

There is no evidence that Thomas West, 3rd Lord de la Warr, had a Native American wife or mistress, no evidence that he had a legitimate or illegitimate son who was half Native American, no evidence he had a son named Toby West: his children were Cecily, Lucy, Robert, Henry and Martha; No evidence that "Rachel" went with Pocahontas to England. While Rebecca Rolfe and her family were accompanied by members of the Powhatan Tribe, to the best of my knowledge there is no record of who accompanied her other than Uttamatomakkin AKA Tomocomo.

The name of Totopotomoy's mother is not known and TOTOPOTOMOY WAS NOT THE SAME AS TOBY WEST. Toby West was an Englishman who is known to have been alive on 8 June 1659, and Totopotomoy was a Pamunkey Chief who died in early 1656 (probably in March). There are land records for Toby West proving this. And Totopotomoy had interaction with the Governor's Council, nowhere do court/assembly records indicate Totopotomoy was English OR known as Toby West.

"Rachel" is reported to be both the wife of Raleigh Croshaw and the wife of Joseph Croshaw. So she married her own son? I think not!!! There is no evidence that Captain Raleigh Croshaw married a Native American woman or that his wife was named "Rachel", the name of Croshaw's wife does not appear to be recorded anywhere, her name is not known.
While it is generally accepted that Joseph Croshaw was Raleigh's son, the name of his mother is not known. Joseph Croshaw married 5 times, the name of his 1st wife IS NOT KNOWN, with her he had 5 children: Mary, Unity, Rachel, Benjamin and Joseph. So... it is known he had a DAUGHTER named RACHEL CROSHAW, but no evidence that was the name of his 1st wife; His other 4 wives were: 2nd - Widow Finch; 3rd Ann, Widow of Augustine Hodges; 4th Margaret, Widow of Daniel Tucker, 5th Mary, Widow of Thomas Bromfield.

Now Joseph's daughter Unity DID marry a West, Colonel John West, Jr. And John West is believed to have had a relationship, and a son, with Native American leader Cockacoeske, who was the widow of Totopotomoy. Therefore, Cockacoeske had a son named John West, who was half-English, and half-Native American. It seems that someone took creative license with Cockacoeske's story, re-writing it with different names to create a new untrue story to suit their purpose.

Wahunsenacawh has not been identified to have had a daughter named Rachel.
The Great King of Patawomeck, whose name is not known, has not been identified to have had a daughter named Rachel.
She may have existed but there does not appear to be anything to support her existence. And certainly not in the relationships that have been attributed to her.

Instead of creative stories and speculation, sources need to be found that support what really happened. If they can be found.

Cousin of Pocahontas. Her birth date is uncertain. Some say circa 1595. Widely varying theoretical dates are given in internet postings by professional and amateur researchers. She accompanied Pocahontas on her trip to England in 1616.

Mother of Toby West (Chief Totopotomoy of the Pamunkey) [SIC] by Thomas West, 3rd Lord de la Warr, circa 1616.

Tribal historians say she later married Col. Joseph Croshaw, burgess, and became the mother of several of his children, including possibly (some say) Unity Croshaw married John West II, nephew of Thomas West, Lord de la Warr.

Death date is UNKNOWN, but 1646 according to several family trees on Ancestry.com (sources not shown).

SHE IS NOT KNOWN to have been buried on the Pamunkey reservation which was officially established as the permanent home of the Pamunkey tribe as early as 1648, but since the remains of earlier Pamunkey leaders Chief Opchanacanough and the great Powhatan were indeed brought to the burial mound on this site and interred here as legend says, with the remains of other tribal leaders, and her son Totopotomoy is here as well, then it is possible Toby West's mother Rachel Croshaw could be here, too.

William Deyo, official Pamunkey tribal historian, said, "Rachel Powhatan would not have been a sister of Pocahontas but a cousin (born about 1600). For Rachel to have the bloodline of the matrilineal royal succession, she had to have been a daughter or granddaughter of Powhatan's sister, whom I believe was the wife of the Great King of Patawomeck. When the King of Patawomeck called Opitchipam his brother, it was because he was actually his brother by marriage rather than his real brother, as by the words of Powhatan, himself, he only had 3 brothers by his mother (Opitchipam, Opechancanough, and Keckatough)."

This surname has been spelled variously as Croshaw, Croshawe, Crashaw, Crowshaw and Chroshaw.

Rawleigh was referred to as "Captain Rawleigh Crashaw, of Kequotan, gent., and ancient planter."[1]

NOTE by Chet SNOW: Rawleigh Chroshaw Esq., (AKA Capt. Rawleigh Crashaw), was from an old London merchant family; relatives were in the Virginia Company that founded Jamestown, VA on May 13, 1607. Captain Rawleigh emigrated to Jamestown in 1608 (in his 30s) and was elected to the VA House of Burgesses in 1623 when the colony gave him a grant of 500 acres at "Olde Poynt Comfort" near Kequotan (modern Hampton VA) across the James River. Others say that he may have been born in 1569 or 1570; this seems more likely if he had a daughter in 1586.][3]

On March 13, 1625, Captain Francis West was referred to as administrator of Capt. Croshaw, so Croshaw died in November 1624 where he represented Elizabeth City. It was certainly after 1623, when he was given a grant of 500 acres at "Old Poynt Comfort."[4]

"I descend from Raleigh Croshaw born 1570 England died 1624 Elizabeth River, Norfolk, Virginia; he married his 2nd wife Ursula Unity Patawomeck, daughter of great chief Patawomeck and her mother was possibly a sister to [Great Chief] Powhatan.

They had at least 5 children named Richard, Joseph, Benjamin, Noah, and Ursala Unity (notice difference in the spelling of Ursala for her mother Ursula).

Ursala Unity Croshaw married 1st Robert Blackwell; their son James Blackwell born 1647 York Co., Virginia died 1717 New Kent, Virginia, he married Lydia Turner born England, their daughter Lucie Blackwell born 1685 New Kent, Virginia (is my ancestor);Lucie died 1750 Hanover, Virginia.

Lucie Blackwell married Benjamin II Goodman/Goodwin they had 3 sons : Samuel,Robert and Benjamin III Goodman.

Robert Goodman born 1703 Isle Wright, Virginia, he died 1759 Hanover, Virginia; he married Mary (LNU); their son Bartelott Goodman born 1731 Hanover, Virginia died 1800 Iredell, North Carolina, he married Tabitha Gibson of Louisa, Virginia. They had at least 2 children: Ansel G.Goodman and John James Goodman.

John James Goodman born 1758 in Botetourt Co, Virginia died after 1800 in Greene co, Tennessee, he married Epharilla Thorpe, they had 9 children, their daughter Mary Sallie Goodman born 1779 in Botetourt Co, Virginia died 1855 in Wayne co, Tennessee she married Archibald Henry Lamb they had at least 8 children all of whom married into the Qualls and Austin families.

This is my direct line, I am looking for information on the great chief Patawomeck and who his wife was and a list of his daughter Ursula Unity Patawomeck and her siblings.

   "Upon the Mary and Margaret, a part of the Second Supply, traveled 38 year old Captain Raleigh Croshaw, Esq. from Crashaw, Lancashire, England, who later through his early experiences in protecting the young colony against the natives, achieved a reputation as a skilled Indian fighter, and is listed as an adventurer in the Virginia Company, 1618, 1620. When the massacre of 1622/3 occurred, Croshaw was on a trading cruise on the Potomac and at once challenged any of his men to fight him naked but the offer was not accepted. Raleigh Croshaw was elected to the House of Burgess for Elizabeth City in 1624 and died that same year. According to Land Office Patents and Grants in Virginia, Raleigh purchased 500 acres of land, but no date or county location was given. Biography

Unity Croshaw was born circa 1594 in Probably Werowocomoco, Pamaunke River. Her parents were The Great Chief Japasaw Oppasus Patawomeck and Sister of Powhatan.

Unity married Capt. Raleigh Croshaw, Ancient Planter. Together they had the following children: Major Joseph Croshaw; Noah Croshaw; Capt. Richard Croshaw.

She died in 1624 in Virginia.

About the Grand daughter of this Unity is this on Unity (Crowshaw) West: She was NOT the daughter of Japasaw. She was the daughter of Major Joseph Croshaw. It is believed that her mother was the daughter of the Sister of Chief Wahunseneca (aka Chief Powhatan) of the Powhatan Federation.
Her mother was sometimes referred to as "Rachel Powhatan" but her real name is not known

Following is from Bill Deyo - Patawomeck Tribal Historian (7-24-2017) before knowledge of the ydna of Sonne of Pamunky was forwarded to him as not De la Warr matching, disconnecting De la Warr as parent of Sonne of Pamunky:

"I have not looked at the Croshaw family for many years and am not sure which children were by "Rachel" except for Unity Croshaw who married John West, son of Gov. John West (brother of Thomas West, Lord Delaware). Unity's husband, John West, had an affair with the widow of Chief Totopotomoy, namely Cockacoeske, granddaughter of Chief Opechancanough, and sired a son, John West, whom Leonard West identified with Maj. John West of Stafford County, who was often involved with Indians. Toby West (believed by Leonard West to have been Totopotomoi) patented 500 acres of land in the Pamunkey area in Gloucester County, VA, which Joseph Croshaw took over after Toby's death. When Maj. John West (apparent son of Cockacoeske) died in Stafford County in 1718, he left "500 acres at Pamunkey" to his son, John West the younger. We assume that it was the same 500 acres that Toby West patented but have never been able to prove it because of the loss of records. There is a longtime tradition in the Croshaw family that Unity often took care of Jane Rolfe, Pocahontas' granddaughter, because of their close kinship.

About the younger Unity Croshaw (ca. 1636 - April 20, 1669, New Kent County, Virginia) was the daughter of Major Joseph Croshaw, one of the main figures of early Jamestown Settlement. She was the grandchild of Raleigh Croshaw, one of the founders of Jamestown. She was the daughter-in-law of Colonial Virginia Governor John West (governor) of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia (now part of the United States). But she is perhaps most notable as the reportedly shrewish wife of Colonel John West, son of Governor John West, who divorced him for adultery when he left her to live with Cockacoeske who was the queen of the Pamunkey Indians and a cousin of Pocahontas.

Unity Croshaw was born at Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, James City, Virginia. She was christened in 1636 at West Point, King William County, Virginia, and she married Colonel John West there in 1654. The couple had the following children:

•Captain Nathaniel West (b. 1655-1724), he was mentioned in records as a Captain in 1662, a Major in 1667, Lt. Colonel in 1673. He commanded the militia of the county. Nathaniel married his second cousin Martha Woodard. Their son-in-law, William Danridge, was Martha Washington's uncle. •Unity (Susannah) West (b. 1657), married George Martin. •Anne West (b.1660-1708), married Henry Fox. •John West III (b. 1666), married Judith Armistead. •

Unity died on April 20, 1669 in New Kent County Virginia.

There is not a chance that this woman was English. If anything, she was a Pamunkey... This woman's lineage is unknown, but since he lived with the tribes at Werowocomoco, she is definitely in their number. (Read the book by John Smith.)

Captain Rawley Croshaw (the more common spelling) had come to Virginia in 1608 (and his wife had arrived with Elizabeth Baynham in the Bona Nova in 1620, according to his patent of 1623). The Bona Nova, from London, arrived at Virginia Passengers from the Port of London on the Bona Nova to Virginia
