No record of Rachel's birth has been fo ===
No record of Rachel's birth has been found. She was probably born in Sedan, where her older brothers and sisters were christened but the baptismal records between 1609 and 1630 were destroyed by fire in World War II. We know that her parents moved to Leyden when she was about six years old. Her father left the family when she was about thirteen to explore South America and died there in 1624. Two years later, in Leyden's Walloon Church, Rachel married the man who had accompanied her father on the expedition. It was in Leyden that Rachel gave birth to her oldest son who did not long survive. In 1628 she and her husband booked passage on "The Fortuyn" bound for the Caribbean Islands. The following year their son Jesse was born on the Island of Tobago, at that time a Dutch possession. Rachel returned to Leyden in 1630 "enfeabled by the heat of the tropics" and in October gave birth to their third son. Her husband at some point also returned to Leyden for their daughter was born there in 1634. She would be the last of their children born in Leyden for in the fall of 1636, they, along with Rachel's two brothers, Hendrik and Isaac, booked passage on "The Rensselaerswyck" bound for New Netherland -- see The Ancestors and Descendants of James Montaney by Lois Stewart. The ship set sail on 25 Sept 1636. Rachel was five months pregnant at the time and their hope was that the passage would be a short one. However, they ran into rough weather and by 6 November, the captain decided to head for port. His log reads "seeing little hope of getting better wind and weather soon -- though God knows -- having lain to already 17 days because of severe gales and having few provisions for 52 or 53 souls, the number on board to keep dry, we could oppose it no longer, in the first place, on account of the sick people whose number increased daily because of their hardships and, in the second place, because we feared that it might last a long time yet. As we had already passed C ape Finisterre, Spain, to wit, to the north of it, in great peril and were drifting into the bay, I knew nothing better to do than to hold a council with the supercargo, the mate (Hendrik de Forest) and other advisers, to decide what had best be done in the matter. We concluded in the said council to put the helm hard up and to steer in God's name toward the Channel and try to get into Falmouth, England and Plymouth, which was done and at noon we found the latitude to be 43 degrees 9 minutes; the wind and weather as above". By 13 November they were south of the Scilly Islands but "it was very bad weather, we could not see for the rain, thunder and lightning. Toward daybreak the weather became a little better and in the day watch we turned towarrd the land to reconnoiter". Rachel's baby was born in January, about six weeks before their arrival in New Netherland. The family disembarked at Manhattan Island and started work on a farmhouse. Before it could be completed Hendrik de Forest contracted a fever (while in Virginia) and died soon after his return. War broke out with the Indians and although the de la Montagne farm escaped intact, the family was always on guard. Rachel's last son was born in 1641 and two years later (about the beginning of the Indian wars) she died, leaving her five young children motherless.
