Maria de la Montagne

Maria de la Montagne, second daughter of Dr. Johannes de la Montagne and his first wife Rachel DeForest, was born on board the ship Rensselaerswyck off the coast of Madeira on 25 January 1637. Madeira is a Portuguese island, which was often the last landfall for ships sailing across the Atlantic Ocean west to the Americas. Maria was, no doubt, named after her maternal grandmother Marie DuCloux, wife of Jesse DeForest.

Maria grew up in New Amsterdam and, indeed, seems to have lived her whole life on Manhattan Island. When her mother died in 1643, Maria was just six years old. When she was seventeen, she married Jacobus Henrdrickszen Kip. They were married in the New Amsterdam Dutch Church on 8 March 1654.

Jacobus Kip was born in Amsterdam, Holland, on 16 May 1631, the son of hendrick Hendrickszen Kip and his wife Tryntje Lubberts. The Kips came to New Amsterdam as a family in 1637, about the same time as the DE LA MONTAGNE family arrived. Hendrick Kip was a tailor and a leading citizen in New Amsterdam, chosen one of the Board of Nine to advise Director Kieft and his Council. Because of a Kip coat-of-arms carved in stone over the door of the Kip's Bay house, there has been speculation that the Kips were aristocratic in origin, descended from Ruloff DE KYPE of Bretagne who fled to the Netherlands in the 16th century. Records in the Netherlands refer to the marriage of Heyndrik Heydrixse of Niewenhuys, age 24, to Tryntje Lubberts from Swoll, age 25, orphan, betrothed in Amsterdam on 20 April 1624. Hendrick and Tryntje had seven children, six baptized in the Netherlands between 1625 and 1636 and one baptized in New Amsterdam in 1643.

Jacobus Kip became a clerk in the offices of the West India Company in New Amsterdam in 1647. As early as 1649 he was acting as clerk for Director Stuyvesant's Council. On 27 January 1653 he was appointed the first Secretary of the Court of Burgomasters and Schepens of New Amsterdam.

It is not known where Jacobus and Maria first lived in New Amsterdam, but in 1657 Jacobus built a house situated in what later became Exchange Place. In 1665 they lived in what is now Broad Street and they were there probably as late as 1674. In 1686 the Kips were living on a farm of 150 acres on the East River, on what is still known as Kip's Bay or the site of the United Nations buildings in New York City. It is said that Jacobus Kip built a house on this farm in 1655 which was rebuilt in 1696 and which was, for a short time during the Revolutionary War, the headquarters for General George Washington's staff. After the battle of Kip's Bay in September 1776, the house was taken over as the headquarters of the British General, Lord Howe. The house was used continuously thereafter until the end of the war as the headquarters for the British commanders in North America. The house stood upon the line of East 35th Street and was demolished in 1851.

Jacobus Kip resigned from his office as First Secretary in 1657 and thereafter engaged in a profitable brewery business, combining brewing with storekeeping and dabbling in real estate as well. He was a member of the Board of Schepens of New Amsterdam in 1659, 1662, 1665, 1673, and was president of the board in 1674.

Jacobus Kip died on 24 December 1690. His widow, Maria de la Montagne, died on 25 August 1711. They had eleven children, all baptized in the Dutch Church of New York City.
