About Radulf I, comte de Besalú

Count of Besalú (878-circa 920), son of Count Sunifred I and Countess Ermessenda. The first private count of Besalú by delegation of his brother, Guifré I de Barcelona, who said on his death that the county of Besalu was to be handed down to his brother's descendants and not his own. He held properties in Rosselló (French: Roussillon), la Cerdanya, el Conflent, Besalú and el Perapertusès. He is mentioned in documents dating from 876, 885, 887, 888, 891 or 892 and 903 as receiving goods from his relatives, buying lands from the monastery of Sant Aniol d'Aguja, and making donations to Cuixà and la Grassa. He was married to Ridlinda, daughter of Count Alaric d'Empúries and Rotruda, and it is known that he had at least two children: Oliba and Bernat. Bernat was married to Udalgarda, daughter of Count Frèdol de Tolosa, and had a son called Frèdol, a landowner in Besalú. Oliba, owner of extensive domains in the county of Besalú, received a precept from King Radulf I, and it is likely that his descendants were behind the revolt that cost Count Guifré II of Besalú his life.

----
