• ' WALLEN, JOYCE - Joyce Wallen was the wife of Ralph Wallen, q.v.
• ' WALLEN, RALPH - Arriving in 1623 on the Anne Ralph Wallen was accompanied by his wife Joyce. He was on the 1633 freeman list, and he was a Purchaser, but he does not seem to have held any public office. He died before 27 February 1643, when the inventory of the estate of John Atwood showed a debt owing to the widow Wallen (MD 5:158) A deed of 9 June 1660 showed John Jenkins of Barnstable selling land which belonged to him as the heir apparent of Ralph Wallen of Plymouth, deceased (MD 14:234). Samuel Fuller in his will dated 30 July 1633 directed that "my daughter Mercy be and remaine with goodwife Wallen so long as she will keep her at a reasonable charge: (MD 1:24). A Thomas Wallen was recorded on 4 April 1650 along with other as being arrested for helping two women run away from their husbands (PCR 2:149), but whether he was related to Ralph and Joyce Wallen cannot be determined.

• 1. THOMAS WALLING I - Thomas was probably born in 1627 ca.1,10 "It was believed that he came from Plymouth Colony, where 'Joyce Wallen, widow of Ralph' had sold him land."1,7 His death date has not been found in any records, but his will was dated 7-19-1674 or 1675, and proved in court on 11-22-1675 in Providence, R. I. 1,9,10,11
• His first marriage was to Mary Abbott, between the dates of January 22nd and May 28th of 1651.1 Mary was the daughter of Daniel Abbott I who died "intestate" in 1650. Daniel Abbott "came in 1630 in Governor Winthrop's fleet to Massachusetts and was in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1634."12 Mary's mother died in 1643 ca.1 Thomas' wife Mary died in 1669.13

• After Mary died, Thomas married a second time to Margaret (White) Colwell on 6-19-1990.1,14 She was perhaps a widow of Robert Colwell, or divorced by Robert in 1667.11 Margaret's birth date was not known, but she died in 1717 ca.1

• In the records of Providence, R. I., the name of Thomas "Walwin" appeared in the court records of 1645.4 On1-22-1651, a letter was written by Roger Williams of Narragansett to the "town father" of Providence regarding Mary Abbott and the man she might marry.1
  • I understand that one of the orphans of our dear friend, Daniel Abbott [I], is like as she herself told me, to be disposed of in marriage. Tis true, she has come to some years, but she knows not what need the poor maid that of your fatherly care, councel and direction. I would not disparage the young man for I hear he is laborious, etc. and she desires the town to have some assurance that the young man will forsake his formal couse.3
  • "The townsmen should seek assurance and get a 'certificate' to insure that he is not engage to other women."1,14 Since Mary's father died in 1650,1 Mr. Williams assisted her and the Abbott family in such matters.
• Sometime between January 22nd and May 28th of 1651, Thomas did marry Mary Abbott.1 On 5-28-1651, Mary's father's estate papers were filed and it was stated that ". . . possess Thomas Walling, husband of Mary, daughter of Daniel [I] with one-half of the goats and goods and the other half to Daniel [II], son of the deceased.'1,14
• Thomas was receivd as a townsman on 7-18-1651, on the Freeman's List in 1655, and in 1657 he was a commissioner in Providence.11 On1-25-1657, Thomas sold a "homeshare of land to Richard Pray," and in 1660 he was a Surveyor of Highways.11 In one record of 2-19-1665, Thomas was noted with "Lot #72 in the division of lands."11

• After Mary died, Thomas married a second wife. Her name was Margaret (White) Colwell. The date of marriage was on 6-19-1669.1 Margaret was either a widow, or was divorced from Mr. Colwell in 1667.4 . . . .

The "Mayflower" in 1620 and the "Fortune" in 1621 preceeded them. The arrival of the "Anne" and her sister ship, the "Little James" brought the total number of colonists to about 200.

Ann, the first child of Ralph and Joyce Wallen, was born shortly after their arrival. Ann married John Smalley, a tailor. The Smalleys moved to Eastham then to Little Compton, RI, then later to Piscataway, NJ.

Sailed from port of London, arrived in Plymouth, Mass. on July 10, 1623 aboard Mayflowers sister ship "ANNE". Linked to the Jamestown settlers, the first Families of Virginia and the same bloodline as three Presidents. In 1633 is was on the freeman list, he was a purchaser

She was in Barnstable by 1651–2.

Family: Ralph Wallen married Joyce _____ by 1623. After his death, she married (2) Thomas Lumbard as his third wife. She died after September 1683, probably in Barnstable.

Children of Ralph and Joyce Wallen:

Mary was born about 1628. She married (1) John Ewer about 1648, but there were no recorded children. He died before June 29, 1642. She married (2) John Jenkins on February 2, 1652/3, in Barnstable and had seven children. He died between September 25, 1683, and October 26, 1685, in Barnstable. She was still living on October 28, 1685. Thomas was born by about 1630. He was still living in Barnstable in 1650 (the last mention of his name in the Plymouth Colony records) and may have died or left the colony by 1660.

In 1633 the freemen of the Colony were listed and Ralph Wallen was on the list. He was on the Plimouth Colony tax list for 1632/33. In 1633/34 the name "widow Wallen" replaced her husband's on the tax list. Joyce Wallen continued to live in Plimouth until she sold her land on September 7, 1643 .

The will of Nicholas Snow who had come to Plimouth on the "Anne" with the Wallens gives the names of his neighbors: Ralph Wallen, Thomas Clarke, Manessah Kempton, Edward Bangs and the Hopkins family. The will of Dr. Samuel Fuller on July 30, 1633 directs that "my daughter Mercy be and remaine to Goodwife Wallen". "Goodwife" was a term used for a single female head of a household.

She died after September 1683, probably in Barnstable. Children of Ralph and Joyce Wallen: • Mary was born about 1628. She married (1) John Ewer about 1648, but there were no recorded children. He died before June 29, 1642. She married (2) John Jenkins on February 2, 1652/3, in Barnstable and had seven children. He died between September 25, 1683, and October 26, 1685, in Barnstable. She was still living on October 28, 1685. • Thomas was born by about 1630.
