Note from Evelyne FLANQUART

Translation: According to the chronicler Jean de Guise, he took a striking revenge for the insults he received from the Count of Flanders, and he was not afraid to wage war against the Count of Hainaut over the foundation of the tower and castle of Athd, which he claimed belonged to his wife.

It must be said that Gilles de Trazégnies, brother of Anselme de Silly, before leaving for the crusades in 1136 sold the land of Ath which came to him from his grandmother Beatrice d'Ath to Baudouin de Hainaut. The son-in-law of Ade d'Ath, sister of the aforementioned Beatrice, did not accept to be deprived of his rights on this land. The dispute was settled, after many years of mutual intimidation, between the son of Rasse de Gavre & Ide de Chièvres and Baudouin de Hainaut, who ended up incorporating the châtellenie of Ath into the county of Hainaut and built a castle there.

He died during a battle between Thierry d'Alsace, count of Flanders and Baudouin de Hainaut. Baudouin came to take back the castle of Raoulcourt that he had built from Thierry d'Alsace, who occupied it. Rasse perished in the assault (Annales du Hainaut, XII, 9).

V. RASSE, SIRE ET BARON DE GAVRE, count of Everghem, great cupbearer of Flanders, appears, in the year 1088, in a charter of Lutbert, abbot of Hasnon, relating to a sale of land, girded, around this time, the sword of the famous Gilles de Chin, whom Gossuin d'Oisy wanted to lead to a brilliant tournament announced by the knighthood of the country of Ostrevant, took part, in 1096, in the first crusade with several of his relatives, and returned after a short absence, since his seal was affixed to a deed issued at Ypres, in 1103, in favor of the abbey of the Benedictines of Oudenbourg, in the diocese of Bruges; figure still in other charters, and among others in an act of 1117, by which Baudouin, councillor of Flanders, made a donation in favor of the regular canons of the order of Saint Augustine, in Vormezeele. He had married Ide du Reulx, lady of Ath, daughter of Wauthier, lord of Ræulx, lord of Ath, and Ade de Roucy, lord of Béatrix, heiress of the land and seigneury of Ræulx, who married Arnoud de Hainaut, son of Baudouin II, of Jerusalem, count of Hainaut, of whom a son, Rasse, who was born...

If the statement “appears, in the year 1088, in a charter of Lutbert, abbot of Hasnon, relating to a sale of land” is true, Raase would have been born closer to 1067 based on Flanders age standards that required a person be 21 in matters of land or inheritance

Rasse, sire and baron DE GAVRE, count of Everghem, great cupbearer hereditary from Flanders, was probably very young at the sad end of his father, in 1070. (Miræus, tI, p.74), reports a charter from the year 1088, by which Lotbert, abbot of Hasnon, admitted having sold his alleus, located in Aalst, Rasseghem and Lède, to Gilbert, son of Baldwin of Ghent; it is signed by Rasse DE GAVRE. At that time, a brilliant tournament was announced by the knighthood of the country of Ostretant; all the nobility was invited to it, and from all parts well-equipped and most skilful knights hastened to prepare for it and get there. Gossuin d'Oisy offered to lead Gilles de Chin; he put on the spurs of the young knight and Rasse De Gavre put the sword on him. Baron de Gavre took part in the first crusade, in the year 1096, with the principal lords of Flanders and even of Belgium. Among them were several of his relatives. The list is printed in the genealogy of the van der Straten family, under the first generation. He returned from this murderous war, and even his absence was not long, since the seal of Rasse the boutillier was appended to an act issued at Ypres, in 1103, in favor of the Abbey of Audenbourg, of the order of Saint-Benoît, in the diocese of Bruges: he sealed with Hacket, dean of Saint-Donat, Conon, lord of Bruges, etc. (Miræus, volume III, page 31), reports yet another charter of 1117, in which Razo DE GAVRE figures among the witnesses; by these letters, Baudouin, count of Flanders, made a donation in favor of the canons regular of the order of Saint-Augustin, in Vormezecle.

Rasse, baron de Gavre, seems to have abandoned the shield worn by his ancestors or predecessors and adopted a gold shield with a lion gules, armed and langued Azure, crowned with a crown, and the lion's head to crest of the shield crowned with gold. This period is remarkable for the changes and variations found in the coats of arms of noble families; it is since then that we see the lion appear in so many bizarre forms.

Rasse, sire and baron de Gavre, married Ide du Roulx, lady of Ath, daughter of Wauthier, sire du Ræulx, lord of Ath, and Ade de Roucy. His elder sister, Beatrix, heiress of the land and lordship of Roulx, married Arnoud de Hainaut, son of Baudouin II, of Jerusalem, count of Hainaut. Rasse, Sire de Gavre, left:
