Thomas MELTON was born in 1770/1780 in NC or VA. He died in 1839/1840.

Thomas served in the War of 1812. "Tennessee in War of 1812" by Sistler:
" Thos. Melton, Pvt. 1st Reg. TN Vol. Inf.. Capt. Abraham Bledsoe; Col. Edward Bradley commanding"
Thomas and his family were in 1820 census of Lincoln County, Tennessee:
   Three males under age 10, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 male 10-16
(James Madison Melton was born in TN in 1816, making him age four in 1820)

Thomas acquired land in Jefferson County, Alabama in 1822 (Vol. 25 p. 69 "Pioneer Trails"). The family lived on the border of Jefferson and St. Clair Counties. James Madison Melton had relatives in St. Clair County and his wife, Mary Sheffield, was from there. Thomas’ family was in Jefferson Co., AL census in 1830: Thomas' age was between 50-60. Also listed: two females under 5, 1 male under 5, 1 male and 1 female 5-10, 1 male between 15-20, 1 male 20-30 ( James Madison Melton would have been 14 or 15 in 1830) The Claytons lived nearby.

In 1835 Thomas and his wife, Anna joined the Cahaba Baptist Church. Their minister was Sion Blythe whose son, Rickets, bought land from Thomas and Anna in 1836. Rickets also married Rebecca Clayton. Rebecca’s brother, John Clayton married Agatha Milton. The Claytons were also from Lincoln County, Tennessee. John and Agatha Clayton were next door to James Madison Melton in the 1840 census of Itawamba County, Mississippi.

In November 1836 Thomas was excluded from the church for a violation of God's law and civil law by beating a woman. In February 1839 Thomas was restored into the church and later dismissed by letter. That may be when they went to Texas.

The 1840 census of Rusk County, Texas shows Anna and children; Thomas must have died by then. No death record or will has been found. Pioneer Trails 976.178 B2p (All 40 vols. Checked by Dorothy Knight in Nov. 1999 for Meltons and Claytons.)
