About Rev. John Bates

GEDCOM Note

DateGuess Disputed identity/associations: Family files report varying information about men named John Bate, all somehow associated as close relations or ancestors of Rev. Stephen Bachiler's first wife. Her name has not been found recorded, but she is called Ann and believed closely related to Rev. John Bate who succeeded Bachiler as the Vicar of Wherwell in 1605.<ref>Charles Batchelder, "Batchelder/Bachilder Genealogy, through Rev. Stephen Batchiler's son Stephen Bachilder," 1985, Carl W. Brage, ed., p. 2; digital images, Lane Memorial (Hampton, NewHampshire) Library (accessed 2014).</ref> Vicar Bate had known wife Dorcas and children John Bate, Ann Bate (married Robert Southwood) and Gabriel Bate.<ref>Charles Batchelder, "Batchelder/Bachilder Genealogy, through Rev. Stephen Batchiler's son Stephen Bachilder," 1985, Carl W. Brage, ed., p. 2; digital images, Lane Memorial (Hampton, New Hampshire) Library (accessed 2014).</ref> No historical records closely associate any other men, John Bate, with the Rev. Bachiler. Following a series of G2G postings, the profile of John Bate (Bate 37) was re-identified as the man believe Rev. Bachiler's brother-in-law. See G2G for "Proposal to re-identify (or not) John Bate and wife Dorcas (16th century, England)."

Of note

  • At one time, WikiTree profile John Bate and his wife, Dorcas Bate reportedly married 15 June 1579 at Lydd, Kent, England. They were associated as the grandparents of Vicar Bate and his sister, Ann (Bate) Bachiler. This marriage information was removed after it was shown to be that of another couple, John Bate and Mary Bennett (see G2G). Based on another G2G, "Seek to sever John Bate from parents," a parent-child relationship wassevered.
  • At one time John Bate (Bate-37) was reported son of Andrew Bate of Lydd, Kent, England, who himself was reported born there. WikiTree reported, however, that John was born elsewhere, at Hampshire, England, in 1520. There was an Andrew Bate of Lydd said to have had son John Bate, but this John Bate (aka John Bates was reported born at Lydd. The will of Andrew Bate is known; it did not mention a second son John. The link from John Bate-37 to parents Andrew Bate/Margaret was severed as per G2G discussion, "John Bates of Lydd surely did not have a brother John Bate of Wherwell (16th century)."
