S. and h. of Richard, of Bakewell [afterwards of Willersley, Derbs.], and grandson of Sir Richard Arkwright, the inventor of the Arkwright spinningframe (for whom see D.N.B.). Born Sept. 30, 1781. School, Eton. Did not matriculate and doubtful if resided. Of Normanton Turville, Leics., and of Sutton Hall, Derbs. M.P. for Rye, 1813-18 and 1826-30. Married Martha Maria, daughter of William Beresford, of Ashbourne, Derbyshire., Rector of Sunning, Berks., May 22, 1803, at Ashbourne. Died v.p. and s.p. Mar. 28, 1832, at Normanton. Will proved (P.C.C.) Aug. 8, 1832. Brother of Charles (1806),


Richard Arkwright was an English politician.

He was the oldest son of Richard Arkwright (died 1843) of Willersley Castle, Derbyshire, and grandson of the entrepreneur Sir Richard Arkwright (1732–1792), whose invention of the spinning frame and other industrial innovations made him very wealthy.

Young Richard was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He and his five brothers were endowed as landed gentry by their father, who gave Richard £30,000 on his marriage in 1803 (equivalent to £2.47 million in 2017. He managed his father's estates at Normanton Turville in Leicestershire and Sutton Scarsdale in Derbyshire.

Living at Normanton Turville, he served as an officer in the yeomanry, and as Member of Parliament for Rye from 1813 to 1818, and from 1826 to 1830.
