About Richard Butler, of Stratford

Do not confuse with Deacon Richard Butler. There were two contemporary Richard Butlers in early Connecticut. This Richard lived in Stratford, Connecticut. The other Richard lived in Hartford. They both had daughters named Mary.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Butler-14816

Richard's wife is unknown. It was not Elizabeth Bigelow. She was not mentioned in the probate agreement, so probably died before 18 May 1676 (Richard's Inventory.) Elizabeth Bigelow is confusing the two Richards, but she is wrong for the other Richard also.

Estimating Birth: his daughter Mary m. 1655, so probably born 1630-1635. A short estimate might be 1615, but probably 1605-1610.

RICHARD, Stratford 1650, d. 1676, had two ds. Mary, wh. m. 7 June 1655, John Washburn, and next, Thomas Hicks of Hempstead, L. I. and Phebe, wh. m. Benjamin Peak, wh. sometimes wrote his name Peat.[1]

Richard Butler's Inventory was 18 May 1676. An agreement was made between Thomas Hicks, Mary Hicks, Benjamin Peat and Phebe Peat.[2]

Benjamin and Samuel Peat, Jr of Stratford, conveyed 1713 land from grandfather Richard Butler deceased. John Washbourne of Flusihing, L I Gent., conveyed in 1712 to Daniel Beardsley, right in Stratford land. John Hicks of Flushing, L I, eldest son of Thomas Hicks y wife Mary (dau. of Richard Butler of Stratford, with Samuel Simmons and his wfe Phebe, John Isman and his wife Elizabeth and Sarah Rushmore, all of Flushing, three daus. of Thomas and Mary, appointed 1712 their brother Jacob Hicks to act as their attorney.[2]

Children:[2]

  1. Mary Butler m. (1) 17 Jun 1655 John Washbourne; m. (2) thomas Hicks
  2. Phebe, m. Benjamin Peat.

Hello Erica and thanks for answering. Because I am like a dog searching for a bone, I have kept looking since I sent out the request. And found not only answers but well documented. First is from rootsweb uploaded by a Philip under Thomas Hicks. The second is from GenForum uploaded by a Berna Hunter and is very well documented including the instrument Thomas executed for the CT. Probate District of Fairfield that Philip had. This is it in a nut shell: Mary daughter of Richard Butler (mother unknown) of Stratford, Ct. married Thomas Hicks 1659 in Hempstead, NY. after her first husband John Washburn died October 30, 1658. Mary and John had one son. Mary and Thomas married 1659 had seven children: Thomas, John, Jacob, Phebe (the one in my line), Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth. Mary died 1675/6. Thomas married second Mary Doughty in 1677 and they had six more children. So the article quoted on Find a Grave was wrong and as are a good number of sites on the web. The confusion comes from one: there were two Richard Butlers. One from Stratford, the other from Hartford living and dying about the same time. They both had daughters named Mary. Two: Thomas's wives were both named Mary.
