Richard Ward Greene (1792-1875) was born in Potowomut, Rhode Island to Christopher (1748-1830) and Deborah (Ward) Greene (1758-1835). He had two stepsisters: Anne (Greene) Maxwell (b. 1776) and Catharine Greene (1780-1840), from his father's first marriage to Catharine Ward (1752-1781). Richard also had seven other siblings: Christopher (1783-1814), Celia (1786-1829), Emily (1787-1814), Nathanael (1789-1847), Samuel Ward (1794-1872), John Ward (1795-1820), and Elihue (1802-1878). He married Catharine Celia (Greene) Larned (1816-1887), daughter of his cousin Albert Collins Greene and widow of the Hon. Samuel Larned. They married on November 12, 1851 and had no children.
Greene graduated from Brown University in 1812 and then studied at a law school in Litchfield, Connecticut for two years. In 1814 he settled in Boston and practiced law there until he returned to Rhode Island and began a practice in Providence in 1816. Greene served as District Attorney from 1826 until 1848 when he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He resigned from the Supreme Court in 1854 so he could return to the practice of law. He also served in the State Senate (1847-1848) and in the General Assembly for Warwick (1865-1872). He died on March 14, 1875 and is buried in Potowomut.

Chief Justice Greene was an American attorney, having graduated from Brown University and having studied law at Litchfield Law School and under Boston lawyer Ebenezer Rockwell. He was appointed U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island in 1826 and also served in both houses of the state legislature.
In May 1848 was elected as Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and he later resigned the position on June 14, 1854.
His nephew, Albert Collins Greene, was a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island. His uncle was the Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene.

He was buried in Old Forge Burial Ground, Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, United States.
