HAWES, Robert, a soap-boiler, ae. 19, came in the Elizabeth and Ann in April, 1635. Settled at Roxbury. Rem. to Salem. His mill referred to in 1648. [Es. files.] Rem. to Wenham; propr. 1(J54. His wife Frances made nunc, will June 12, prob. Essex Court, Sept. 10, 1645; beq. to sons Robert and Mathew Edwards, to the young ch. Thomas she had by Robert Hawes; to Alice, dau. of Robert Hawes; to her sister Ellen [Hiler] in Eng.; to Katharine Dorlon and Sarah Bartlett, the two maids that kept her in her sickness; four pounds to a child in old England. He d. 29 (10) 1666, ae. about 84. Will prob. Jan. 18, 1666-7; sons Thomas and John Hawes; dau. Mary; wife; son Humphrey Barrett, exec; bro. John Pierpont and friend Edward Dennison, Overseers.

BARRETT, HUMPHREY, Concord, s. of the preced. freem. 1682, had, I suppose, m. a d. of Robert Hawes of Roxbury, wh. in his will calls him s. had Joseph, and Benjamin, was rep. Oct. 1691.


Matthew Edwards came to New England in the Speedwell 1656, from London, but he had come near 20 years before with his widowed mother who married Robert Hawes, and in her will of 12 Jun 1645, mentions him and his brother Robert.

Besides Edmoud, among the early settlers of Massachusetts were Edward Hawes, who was in Dedham in 1648; Richard Hawes of Dorchester, who came in the Truelove in September 1635; and Robert Hawes of Salem, Wenham, and Roxbury, in which last named town he died in 1666. There is no evidence that these were of kin to each other, and they certainly were not nearly related to Edmond, although it seems not improbable that Richard was of the Warwickshire stock.
