Page 59. 35 Robert Hungerford, d. 18 May 1493, 2nd Lord Hungerford, of Heytesbury, co. Wilts; m. Margaret Botreaux, d. 7 Feb. 1477/8, dau. & h. of William de Botreaux, d. 1462, 3rd Lord Botreaux, of Boscastle, Cornwall, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth Beaumont, dau of John Beaumont (17-32), Lord Beaumont. (CP II: 61, 242-243, VI: 617-618).

Robert Hungerford, 2nd Lord Hungerford [S6] was born 1409 in Farleigh Hungerford, Somerset, England, and died 14 May 1459, and in accordance with his will was buried in Salisbury Cathedral.[1]

Also known as 2nd Baron Hungerford of Farleigh, he gained the title of 2nd Lord Hungerford. [S6] Robert served in the French wars, and was summoned to parliament as Baron Hungerford from 5 September 1450 to 26 May 1455. He was succeeded by his son Robert Hungerford, 3rd Lord Hungerford (1431–1464) also known as Lord Moleyns and Hungerford. [2] [S6]

Parents: The second but eldest surviving son of Sir Walter Hungerford, 1st Lord Hungerford [S6] also known as the 1st Baron Hungerford of Farleigh; and Katherine Peverell [S1916].

Married

1. about 1408 in Forley, Somerset, England to Margaret de Botreaux, Baroness Botreaux [S37] (born abt. 1380 - died 7 Feb 1478). She was the wealthy heiress of William, Lord Botreaux by whom he added very largely to the landed property of his family in Cornwall [3] by his wife Elizabeth Daubeney.

Family notes

His wife lived until 7 February 1478, surviving all her descendants, excepting a great-granddaughter, Mary Hastings, 4th Baroness Hungerford. Her long and interesting will, dated 8 August 1476, is printed in Nicolas's "Testamenta Vetusta", pp. 310 sq., and in Hoare's "Modern Wiltshire, Hundred of Heytesbury". A list of the heavy expenses she incurred in ransoming her son Robert appears in Dugdale's 'Baronage,' ii. 204 sq.[2]

• ' I bequeath my body to ecclesiastical burial before the altar of St. Osmund the Bishop and Confessor in the cathedral church of Salisbury.

• Item, I exhorte pray and hertly biseche you my said sonne Lord Moleyns, that Lykin as ye woll to be doon for your self such tyme as God lustith to calle you owte of this present life, that ye suffer your moder and the persones that I haue put in trust to execute and performe this my last will in every Article, and that ye grugge not with nothing comprisid herein. And I beseche inwardly God yeve you his blissing, and as ferforth as any fader hath power I yeve you my blissing.
• Item, I pray and charge Margaret my wife that after the 6 wekes be passed the which I have ordeigned my houshold shalbe kept to gedir aftre my passing oute of this lief, that she dispose hir to take hir logging in a litill place there as she may be moost to hir comfort and worship, and in all thinges she hath doon that she be counsellid and avisid be suche persones as haue be my trewe frendes and seruantes and hirs both, and that in noo wise she put her self undre the Rewle of any singular persone. And if she do, thenne I wol and charge all thos persones that I haue enfeoffid in alle my Landes, that they in no wise suffre my said wife ne noon other persone in hir behalf to Receive or take any maner profit of my forsaid Landes, but only of suche Landes as the Lawe woll that she haue dower of, but thenne that my said feoffees suffre John Mervyn, Maister John Pers, Maister John Ulfeton to take the profittes of my said Landes to performe this my said last will. Sir ROBERT HUNGERFORD, Knt, as 2nd Baron Hungerford, summoned to parliament from 5 September, 1450, to 26 May, 1455. Of this nobleman very honourable mention is made regarding his services in France, during the life-time of his father, under the Regent Bedford. In the 17th HENRY VI. he inherited the estates of his aunt, Alianore Talbot, the only sister of his mother, and the co-heir of Thomas Peverell. His lordship m Margaret Botreaux, only dau. and heir of William, Lord Botreaux, (who d. in 1477), and had issue,
